That tailshaft length worries me, does not look like much travel in the slip joint, is that just the angle though?

What was the price and specs on the tailshaft? interesting on the box, I can ask a transmission builder mate for you?

Theres about 12mm travel at suspension limited droop. Doesn't really get any tighter at full compression. Andy and I checked the full range of motion before we put springs in the back, it'll be OK.

Tailshaft was under AU$400 delivered. 3" chromoly with 1350 ends.

If you know a trans guy that is familiar with 4L80e's, yes please. Not many Aussies seem to know anything about them though, they aren't common here. I think I'll probably strip it down and give it a freshen up anyway, but it'd be nice to know if there is a common component failure that causes it, so I know what to order in advance.

Good tip on the summit tailshaft, i will look into that, we seem to end up paying a lot for tailshafts locally. Im about to order a sway bar for mine from fulcrum/selby. Did you elongate the holes or somesuch to get it to clear the rear diff cover, looked close in earlier photos. Figured i would order it with perhaps some slotted holes and a hoop on the other side to suit dual exhausts under the diff, seems to be no other option that ordering one from the states at a cost of about 500 USD.

Andrew at york road automatics in Penrith did a 4l80E for us once for a GMC truck, he seems to know the ins and outs of them.

All very strange regarding the clutches, seems like someone went to alot of effort to use it as a donor - surely a new set of clutches would the far easier option for whoever pulled it down etc.
Anyways, best of luck getting it back together, I don't envy you on that one!

Update! My car is back in the shed!

We've decided to change things up a little bit. I've relaxed my position on being a tight-ass and have decided to a decent wastegate and fuel system. I don't have my old Statesman anymore and have a heap of 'better' parts laying around that I'm just going to put into the Volvo.

First up, I've got a big Holley fuel pump with an AI surge tank that I plan on installing in the buttcheek of the car. I'll cap it off to keep the noise/smell to a minimum.

The original plan of the twin 38mm gates has also changed as one was going to be too close to the electric power steering pump / lines. The replacement wastegate I purchased is a 5th generation Turbosmart 50mm, which is a little bit bigger than I need, but I'm looking at a lifetime investment on the gate so I can justify the cost.

Andy and I pulled the engine out the other day for a little bit of a cleanup. It was rebuild (poorly) before putting into the Volvo, but since then it has spent ~5 years outside mostly open to the elements. If it's too much work I'll just swap my other engine in, which is a 390ci LSX. If I do this though, I'll also need to consider changing the front suspension and also the turbo...

While the engine is out we've also pulled out the crossmember. The intention is to re-do the brake lines across the firewall to make it easier to drop the frame in the future.

Haven't posted much here in awhile. Also haven't done much of significant value on the project for awhile (until recently.

I've finished rebuilding the 4L80e and its back in the car. Over the last few months (sparingly) I've been working on rewiring the 240. I've done this using factory wiring (wherever healthy), but removing the 240 style fusebox in favour for a relay/fuse box of my choice, located where I'd like it. I've also removed any of the old ratty Volvo plugs and replaced with Deutsch connectors.

I've also been working on the engine harness, which I've 'wrapped up' today. All checks out OK, will aim to power test it next weekend.
