I started it, there are simpler ways than my approach. As jay's car is my old 740. Can fill you in about the basics. I started a thread on turbobricks maybe transfer the info here as it is about the Australian t5 not the US ones.
Have have started a thread in technical @Vee_Que . Please chime in as parts were lost and some of my ideas may not have worked.

A 240 is not worth $5k (unless its a very good GT) anymore, no matter how good it is.
I scrapped a rust free (as in zero) red shell with really good red paint at the beginning of the year.
I bought that car back in 2001 with 147k on it for just under $7k.
Sounds like youre a bit torn on which direction to head in though. Best make that list and work out what you 'must have', 'want' and 'must not have'
My favorite quote at the moment us 'you can do anything... but you can't do everything'
Bang for your buck the P80 (850/C70/S70/V70) platform is a lot better than a 240 or 740 will be - again, ignoring personal preference for a particular model.
A $10k 850R project (total spend) will out perform a $10k 240 or 740 project (total spend) every time.
this isnt to say you shouldn't go and build a monster 240 project of course, just worth thinking about.
If you want to play with E30s, a manual 240 is only springs, shocks, swaybars and a cam away from being hilarious fun.

The rust in the door may be a warning. So have a REALLY good look at other places where rust may loom.

Rust problem areas:
- Butt cheeks
- Gutters
- Rear wheel arches
- Sills
- Front floor pan area
- Windscreen
- Door sills

The underside looked in shape, but was covered in this thick black oily muck, too evenly spread to be oil
Im still on the hunt, the market has been pretty quiet these last few months (Always the case)
Some nice colours are popping up too, but all out of state:

Here is some of my inspiration:
That blue!!!! (Not for sale ofc)
Im sure the right manual car will pop up eventually, then I can toss up whether its worth doing a further gearbox conversion later on down the track

So today I went to see a 94 850 T5, Johns (Volvdat) old T5 courtesy car I believe
260,000, super hard to start when cold (Sounded like no spark so you had to keep cranking or itd die)
Puffs of smoke when you rev and let off (Grey - Black)
Sounded like it had a misfire when cold but smothed out about 70% after a good run
Pulled ok
Steering was notchy
Brakes almost got me killed - went straight to the floor on more than one occasion
Would sometimes hear metalic scraping sounds of bits getting knocked around in the head/cams
Auto trans reverse was fked
Paint, interior all very very average
Sounded very whiney, like a pump or something that was on its last legs (Kinds superchargery/sheep)
Intrestingly, It didnt have OBD2, most 1994 T5s have both OBD2 and 1 ports in the engine bay
The plan was to use the engine in another car, Have it rebuilt, Forged rods, bigger turbo ect
Well, here she is:
As you can hear, she is very clickety - clackety and sounds like a sheep

Hahaha XD
It is very, very cheap :P

Early T5's are old school obd like this, 1996-1997 are hybrid. I don't think till the V70 are they true obd2 the Motronic 4.4
Ex850R
Needs a bit of TLC that one!
Drove it a few times , if you open the air to outside from recirculating it smelled of petrol if I remember correctly..
Cheap enough?
If you need to drive this one I have a good gearbox, steering rack and pump etc
Probably a 2.3 motor that is low Ks but not running to go as well when I pull it , not convinced about that yet though...
Nice looking car though.
Vee_Que
Needs to be under $1000 to be worth it!
AshDVS
Not sure about $1000 but it certainly needs to be bargain-basement priced.
How bad the bodywork is will be the kicker.
Ghettobird
It was 700 plus a slab of choice...
all i really need is the engine, loom, accessories (altenator, turbo manifold ect)
Everything else is a bonus
Would need a complete rebuild though, unless there are better options?
AshDVS
Ah, so you just want an engine?
if thats the case, offer $500 and no slab.
Ghettobird
I did, will let him sit on it for a bit
in that case though, in the condition its in, a full rebuild is mandatory, i was thinking rods, refurb head ect
What do you think id be looking at Ash?

Ex850R
In that case go and talk to Mark at Berry's , he will have a motor there for sure.
$500 is too much if it needs that much work , sounds like it needs everything fixed so you won't make any money on scrapping for parts.
No one wants 850 parts anyway , Jay and I both found that out.

It really depends on how wild you'd like to go. a HPT 5cyl in a 240, even in close to stock form, will be fast.
There are cheap engine internals available as well as really decent stuff.
I'm happy to quote up some rods and pistons if you like though - drop me an email.
CamZH
Yep, thats a great place to start
AshDVS
That one might be worth a look.
