242GT Had anyone ever done the 4.4V8 conversion into a 2 or 7 series , I know about the Penta kits that takes it to over 5ltrs.
Would like to see how they adapt the gearbox up and which gearbox
A Swedish 240 show car was fitted with a B8444S. As was an 1800 show car.
Also, there are two projects on Turbobricks at present -
One is the Buchka "fake racecar" project in the US with a spaceframe and parts of a 242. It's using a transaxle. The other is Mr Fredickson, a B8444S UK swap into a 245 and it's using a BMW gearbox of some sort.
The UK project has highlighted how the B8444S bellhousing side of the engine is very similar to the whiteblock bolt pattern - some holes and dowels line up, and a couple don't. In theory, a B6304S / AW30-40LE bellhousing from a 960 could be modified to fit the V8. I guess someone will have to try putting the two together, and see.
However, there was also some discussion a while back of how someone in the USA was mating up a Volvo V8 with the manual gearbox from an S60, and had managed to fit the starter motor to the V8 in the same general location as where it fits to the 6 cylinder engine. It's mention in the thread on here about the P3 V70 that got a V8 swap.
One thing that scares everyone away from the B8444S is the location of the starter motor, which was optimised for easy replacement when the engine is mounted sideways, as it is in the S80 and XC90. Mounting the unmodified B8444S with proper orientation (i.e. north-south) into a 240 or 7/9 would put the starter motor through the firewall. The other thing scaring people away is .... nobody seemed to know (until the UK thread) what you'd do about fitting a decent transmission, since there was a lot of guesswork about the shape of the bolt pattern on the block (some said it was Ford SHO pattern, etc).
Then of course people get scared to do a swap like this when BNE or Yoshi, etc, don't have an off-the-shelf kit for it.
