One of the modifications i would like to do is update the rear end. - Would a Bootlid from a later model like this one fit? I can see the shape of the rear quarters is a bit different (as are the lights) - but is the opening the same?
Rear end is totally different, you'd have to chop a fair bit up to make it work. If you wanted that rear end but otherwise wanted a '78 looking car, I think it would be much easier to get like an '81-'84 model and swap the guards, bonnet, grille, etc. No welding required.
Yeah I thought as much might be the case, I like basket cases tho so I am happy to do it the hard way

No hurry on any of that, we're not going anywhere. :)
ashley186Hi Guys,
Was a big day to pick it up (about 3 hours each way) - then Took 3 hours to get it off the trailer (when i asked if it had any tyres i should have asked if any of them held air hahaha) - discovered a species of spider previously unknown to me.
The vision has changed from when i first started this thread many years ago, but ive now got a clear picture of what i want to create.
I do some backyard rust repairs and repainting, so those jobs will help me fund this.

The boot lid, quarters and beaver panel are different between your car and the later style pictured. The early cars have quite the following now. Personally, the '79 onwards style (like the green car in your last post) is my preference.
If you're already doing rust repairs and bodywork, swapping over might not be too hard, but its something you'd probably want a parts car for.

Would look so much better without the dumb louvres . The car has exquisite style, why fvk it up with ugly 80s plastic abomination!
jamesincYou should run both the exterior louvres and the interior louvres just to annoy @Ex850R ?
White shoes, long white socks, shorts and Penguin polo tee a must also.
Bowls hat on back shelf...
Drive like a ovlov driver that got us the reputation......
Brothers father in-law was one of those!
*he didn't have rear louvre ......
Spider bombs have been deployed, hope to find some time soon to wash it and clean it out
Love the moss moustache !
Hi Guys - just wanted some information. It appears there is a "5 panel" and "6 Panel" Version of 240 tail light for the early/mid 1980s generation. Do these differ on market / specification level? My preference is for the 5 panel (Im aware they wont be a direct fit).
How are you going to get these to fit in the first place?
ramrodHow are you going to get these to fit in the first place?
Im going to work that out later if i can get a set for a reasonable price - maybe fabricate that moulded corner shape into the quarter panel with fresh metal, or get a beaver section from another car. I do a bit of metalwork and have a few handy tools :)
I’d be focusing more on the mechanicals on that car if I were you, but it’s your choice
Pressure washer and power scrubber had a first crack at removing the moss and grime tonight. Rust doesn't look horrific (compared to the RA28 Celica I did big repairs on). Engine is a B21E which surprised me - the literature I saw online had me thinking it'd be B19A as it's a DL spec. Does have me rethinking a plus T build but there's plenty of time to ponder.
It's pretty random in Australia. All the early 244s were B21 AFAIK, I've never seen a B19 one. What's really weird is that e.g. a 1977 244 DL is a B21E (K-Jet), but a 1981 244 GL is B21A (carb).
When you look online a lot of the pages are from foreign countries. So in this case Australia is a different market
Spent the day tinkering on this one, plugs out and some ATF in the cylinders, new air filter, vacuumed all the dead spiders out of it and replaced the last pancake tyre
Car turns over but no fuel at the filter location. Suspect dead pump as car sat for 15 years. Suggestions for a bigger pump that would work with a modified or larger capacity engine ?
There are two fuel pumps. One inside the tank and one main one outside. I would be very suprised if they're not both seized. Get the correct pumps for the car, I can supply these
PS I think you'll also find the fuel tank to be rusty. If this is the case the contaminated fuel will have compromised the k-jet's delicate fuel system components (the system is very fussy about fuel cleanliness) and you'll probably find some of these parts will be rusted/seized also, entire fuel system overhauls are not uncommon with vehicles in condition such as this
Sorry about that but getting cars to run that haven't for 15 years can get expensive quick

? thanks for the info, sounds like im in for a bad time :)
Indeed, both pumps are thoroughly dead, and cannot be revived, appear to have internally corroded. I have put a few litres of vinegar in the tank to start the cleaning process, have some tank sealer on its way to tidy it up. Got a cheap Haynes manual as well.
