Transponder chipped key & non-chipped key side by side, chipped key is on the left. Much bigger than the non-chipped key. Both genuine Volvo of course.
On cars equipped with the transponder immobiliser system, the immobiliser control module around the steering column reads the key's transponder code via the antenna ring around the ignition lock & sends an all-clear signal to the engine ECU. If the key used to start the engine doesn't have the correct transponder code ECU will shut the engine off after 2 seconds.
