I'm going to pull my glove box out on the weekend a look at mine. It has a Mongoose MSP402 Siren under the bonnet. It has a Volvo Part No. 1222912-6 for 900/200 series.
The Volvo Prt No.1222887 - 0 is for 850 series according to the front of the Volvo operator's instruction manual that I have for it.
I'm yet to discover which remote it came with. The one Will posted is a likely item.

FCC type code eg.cwt5654r is the key to which fob. If the receiver unit is there
But Will @asiandriver pointed out some alarms/central locking are triggered from the alarm relay. So the alarm unit may have a unique fob. @jamesinc car has fobs that are not Volvo, I think a similar dealer install.

No mine I think were fitted by @Rob

Hi everyone,
Just a note on the reprogramming of remotes on all Australian Volvo models from 1993-1998. The remote systems fitted to these vehicles is NOT a geniuine Volvo system! The remote locking systems were fitted locally in Australia by Anti-Theft Australia and should come "pre-programmed" from the dealer. I have had to code remotes to a number of the Anti-theft systems and the remotes supplied are nowhere near the correct frequency for the vehicle. Should you need to cade a remote to one of these systems, split the remote casing, and you should notice a blue circular device with a Phillips head slot in the top, simply use this to tune the remote.
There was another system also fitted to some early S70's which is a Mongoose system, however these are exceptionally rare.
Please note that this information is for AUSTRALIAN MODELS ONLY! I put this information here after an irrate customer abused me the other day after reading this section!
Good luck, and happy motoring!

So maybe Anti-Theft Australia can help if they are still around?

@spt940 Bingo, solves a mystery for me.
That is the broken receiver in my 850R. The fob is correct.
Looks like I will need to buy a receiver OS

@nickm I did some digging on VADIS & found the black receiver unit which you posted above, so it's a genuine Volvo unit not an Australian dealer fitted accessory. Part numbers for the receiver unit & remote are different for different market region.
Also found the following information in one of my service manual.
The control unit you listed in the other thread, 3545654, requires remote 3545653.
VADIS lists this for Saudia Arabia, Thailand and South African market.

Mongoose rings a bell, I remember being told by someone in Volvo Australia years ago that Mongoose supplied alarms for the Australian market.
So I went on their website & found pictures of their current & previous remotes.
http://www.mongoose.com.au/images/remotes12.pdf
Scroll down to the second page, 3rd row from the bottom you'll find the MX120 looks VERY similar to these apart from button & LED location. I'm guessing it's a non-Volvo version as the remotes in the following photo has VOLVO on the other side of the case.
The M550 / M1200MkII looks vaguely familiar, I think my cousin's 850 might've had those remotes.
I bought a remote locking kit from the Volvo dealer in Australia about 12 years ago & I think it came with the M560 / AA660MkII remote. The kit didn't fit the 740 that I had at the time (well at least it wasn't plug & play) so I just sold it on eBay.
Ex850R
The remotes shown above are what I received when my receiver was sent to Sydney to have new fobs coded , I don't recall what the original 855R fob looked like.
asiandriver
Mongoose possibly had 2 different kits for Volvo, either remote locking only, or remote locking with alarm.
The remotes I posted above came from cars without alarm.
I'm pretty sure my cousin's 850 had an alarm & had a 2 button remote.
Ex850R
Yeah , the R was locking only.
Cost quite a bit to get the thing done in Sydney , if I only knew then I could just buy a new locking system instead ....

While we're here, if I want to get a key cut for my 850R, what's the best deal? It has an aftermarket alarm, but do I still need Volvo to program the chip? They quoted me some profoundly absurd amount to do it, like $450 and said they'd need the car for 4 hours.
Ex850R
Isn't it a matter of programming it with a tool Will has? Can't you buy the keys on eBay ?
I could be wrong on all counts here!
Have to get a new key myself.
asiandriver
Transponder key immobiliser system is totally separate from the alarm system.
Using the wrong key to start the car won't set off the alarm, the engine will simply shut down after 2 seconds.
Depends if you want genuine Volvo key or aftermarket key. If going with aftermarket the locksmith has a tool that can read the transponder signal off your existing key & copy across to the new key, but that tool won't work with genuine Volvo key.
Genuine Volvo key I'd get from UK, FRF Volvo charged me £30 for a blank (uncut) key & £58 for a factory cut key, both transponder chipped of cours. Then you'll need a factory Volvo diagnostic tool that can pair the key to your car's transponder. Dealer charge $$$ but I can do it for you. There's a guy in Sydney that just bought the Volvo diagnostic tool as well so he might be closer. You'll still need to obtain the 4 digit PIN to your immobilise system from the Volvo dealer before you can program keys through.

Mine definately has the alarm, so its a two button fob I'm after then?!?!

4 hours??? I can do it in 2 minutes!!

Probably best to talk to Mongoose, since it's their system they should know it better than anyone else (or you'd hope so!).

Ok now this is all becoming clearer. In regards to 850s
Seems Australia as usual had a funny rule regarding frequency or ADR and did not use genuine parts in the AU cars. Probably why so many systems have failed.
So I have seen 2 types of alarm/entry systems.
They work on the 2 Volvo systems principals but as @SPT940 pointed out they are unique to the local market and are after market units.
One system is a separate (non volvo) receiver behind the glove box on the opposite side to the US
and possibly an immobilizer relay under the dash or a bypass unit.. This has a Volvo fob.
This was installed on my 850R.
The other system appears to be an after market alarm system hacked into the alarm relay spot. It works on the alarm guard 2 system where the relay under the dash is also the receiver for the fob. They appear to have a non genuine fob.
So now what I need to work out is the pulses required by the central locking relay.@CamZH and If we can find a central locking kit that can be hacked in.

This from Mongoose Brisbane;
Hi Stephen
The remotes shown (these were the pics of the ones Will posted????) would most probably not be the remotes that your system had ( They are 1988 – 1989 vintage)
Would need a photo of the main alarm module under the drivers dash
Best Regards Tech Support
Wills were from a '96 & '98 960/S90????
nickm
@jamesinc are these your fobs? Also how can we merge these 2 threads so when we find a solution all is complete?
http://ozvolvo.org/discussion/comment/30330#Comment_30330
also I'm doubting the 850 key needs to be coded. Where is the key chip reader in the 850?
asiandriver
On cars equipped with transponder chipped keys there's an antenna ring around the ignition which reads the signal.
If your key looks similar to the ones I've posted above then it's transponder chipped. If it looks smaller than it doesn't have transponder chip.
asiandriver
Yes from 96 model 960 and 98 model S90 respectively.
