Cleaned the throttle body on my 1989 245. It was absolutely filthy.

This is what it looks like when it supposed to be closed with the same gap on the bottom. Should I reseat the plate so that it closes completely?

currently idling at 1500 rpm. Have not gone driving yet, just let it warm up in the driveway

It may just need adjusting. Do you hear the throttle position sensor click as soon as you start opening the throttle? It's the little black plastic doodad attached on the side there.

Did you remove the TPS upon cleaning the throttle body?

@jamesinc

I'm hearing a click but I cant be sure its the tps or if its just from the accelerator cable moving.

I disconnected the accelerator linkage and played with the butterfly switch and am not hearing click

@ramrod I did not remove the tps

It’s possible that someone has adjusted the idle speed in the past

now the throttle body is clean, so more air is being let through the channels that were previously blocked.

check the idle adjustment (8mm nut and flat blade screwdriver)

the idle speed should stay at around 775rpm in neutral

Ok, idle adjustment - screwed it in 1/4 turn but the butterfly is stopping above the idle adjustment screw

Can I adjust the linkage, make it longer, to get the butterfly switch to meet the lowered idle adjustment screw? or should I be looking to adjust the cable tension?

Perhaps the cable is catching, rig up a end of cable oiler so you can shoot CRC down the cable then blow it out with air.

YES!

Got it. Idling at 750/800

Really appreciate the diagram above, bit of a novice and air on the side of caution – Thank you you guys!
