A week after buying it, I finally had a decent look at Batman. The main problem is that it was still on the trailer behind the Falcon and the backyard was too wet to get the Falcon out until yesterday afternoon.
I had already worked out that the engine is locked up, so this wasn’t a surprise…
The holes are in the top, aluminium part of the sump. No damage visible on the block, but I am still not certain that it will be salvageable.
Removing the lower, sheet steel part of the sump was remarkably unhelpful, and the pickup and baffle plates block any view of the crank and (what’s left of) the rods.
The big chunks are aluminium, so are from the sump. The lack of big end caps (etc) in the sump briefly raised my hopes, but then I remembered that the baffle is probably holding a bunch of shrapnel on top of it…
I polished the headlights because it seemed like such an easy thing to do…
Rolled it off the trailer with The Girl’s help.
Have firmed up on the idea of making it the race car. Specifically for Motor Events Racing (the slightly more serious racing that grew out of the death of LeMons).
It’s legal with the 3.8 litre, and in the same class as if it had a a 3.0 or 3.5 in it.
Loose plan is to fix the engine that is in the 380 and fit it to Batman. Use the coilover Bilsteins and the Climax shocks, along with the Evo Brembos and the two sets of aftermarket 17s.
I’ll get a second set of rollcage legs bent up, and use the red Sabelt seat. Shouldn’t cost much to build.
I’m not sure about the bodykit. It’s worth something, but hard to know how much.
Apparently the bodykit has some aerodynamic benefits at 180kph+ but I’m thinking that I’ll be happier with cheap, easily replaced standard Magna bits. Maybe with an aftermarket front splitter and wing?!
It has extractors too, which is another bonus.
