What engine is in the 1983 gle? And tuning question

Hi Fellas.

I took it for rego today and got knocked back, 2 tyres needed, front parkers not working and cabin fan not working. The loud exhaust wasn't an issue! The tyres and parkers are no problem but the cabin fan is a PITA.

I'm taking it to a sparkie on Wednesday to check it out, he said he would replace it if I could source a new blower motor. Any suggestions for a supplier? Also said he would put in the aircon if I can find the bits....

Its really the cabin fan I concerned about atm, I just want to get it on the road. ?

Front parkers.... were not even installed..... Hoping that doesn't indicate an electrical issue. Can someone tell me the front parker globes I'll need?

The local sparkie hasn't done a 240 blower fan before. So I'm looking at a Volvo Mech up the road at Nerang. (Thanks to the recommended suppliers list).

I'm going to take it to another "classic friendly' mechanic for a rego check, I'm hoping he'll pass it with the new tyres and front parkers and on the condition I get the blower fan fixed ASAP.

Also, the in-tank pump is not working. What brand do I want for the pump kit?

Probably a good time to ask. Does anyone have a recommendation in Northern NSW (Murwillumbah) for a Volvo mechanic?

Looks like I'll be doing the blower fan myself. Nobody wants to touch it.

How long does it take the first time? I'm giving myself 2 full days. I've seen the clean flame trap explanation and some Youtubes, I feel confident I can get it done.

I've ordered all the parts including a heater core and hoses from FCP Euro.

I picked up a manual on Ebay as well as a fuel pump.

When its on the road next items will be rear springs and shocks, they are very soft. The fronts feel OK.

What is the go with the falcon swaybar mod? is that a cheaper sway bar option than a Volvo one?

Depending on your physical dexterity, two days (16 hours) is a fair estimate for your first time at a fan motor.

Most of that will be spent dealing with unfamiliar assemblies. Caution is needed with plastic bits - they are old now, and may break.

Finding all the clips around both sides of the HVAC housing is the most challenging part. There are fan turbines on each side of the HVAC - don't mix up the left and right. The clips on each are hard to do the first time, but once you teach yourself the trick, it's easy.

IMHO, the job is made easier by removing the glovebox, steering wheel, stalks, and instrument cluster - doing so allows you easier access to the demister ducts connections on both sides of the outer layer of the HVAC outer housing.

From experience of both, a 240 heater fan R&R is about 27 times less hassle than changing a 960 heater core.

Parts have arrived from FCP! I'll be tackling this on the weekend, i got a new heater core and hoses as well. I did the intank pump last week so things are moving along. Im going to pull the front seats for better access. Ill take a few pictures as i go, and report back next week.

Sorry for the late reply. The blower motor is all done. It took me 2 full days. The continental / vdo motor was not a direct fit, I had to Dremel off the mounting lugs in the case. I also had to shim the fan shafts with little washers to be able to install the shaft end clips. Then clearance the case and fan blades. All in all a painful process. I discovered some new swear words along the way.
