Gutter rust and sealant

Hey Yall,

Im currently working on the surface rust in my gutters and found this sealant stuff is chipping off in some spots.

what would be the best course of action? get rid of all of it and lay some new stuff down? or just get rid of the loose stuff and go on my way with sanding and painting?

It seemed to have some gunk built up underneath but the metal is fine.

Bonus question: is anyone selling the trim piece that runs up the side of the gutter?

Hi Scuffed,

Looks like a 140/240 type gutter. I suggest that you should carefully scrape out the old sealant, it has clearly failed. After that, it is up to you, there are a few options as they say...

1) Use the POR 15 anti-rust treatment system (wire wheel to remove loose rust, phosphoric acid treatment, ethanol wash, dry, coat with POR 15, allow to almost get to touch dry, haze over a trace of acrylic (or other primer?) then allow to dry properly etc, then repaint area / roof etc...

2) Use phosphoric acid anti rust treatment repeatedly until all evidence of rust is removed, clean away traces of the phosphoric acid treatment, wash with ethanol, dry, etch prime (or paint system of your choice) and finally proceed to complete job. Either way will work, just need to be aware that it will be a fair bit of work either way.

Personally, I avoid the use of the water based latex anti-rust preparations on the outside of cars, as they are not compatible with some paint systems such as acrylic lacquer (which I use on my old cars in my own workshop).

I've done this and had the repair last around 9 years now. I used a wire wheel to grind out all the sealant and the surface rust. The sealant I used was U-POL grey-stripe brushable seam sealer. I used masking tape to ensure the sealer was not applied above the edge of the gutter (so it's not obvious to an observer). Then I masked the area and spray painted over the sealer. You can do this with aerosol spray, not sure where you are but I used VG Automotive Paints in Sydney who can produce colour match aerosol cans (and also sell the seam sealer product). HTH!

You can use the brushable polyurethane seam sealer or you can also buy it in tubes for a caulking gun...I've used Sikaflex Polyurethane body and seam sealer/adhesive with good luck in the past. It's also used on boats and caravans etc. for sealing joints.

That definately needs cleaning out, wire buff wheel in an angle grinder or if thats too scarey a smaller one in an electric drill will eventually get there, treat the rust and prime then I would recommend 3M Drip Check. It comes in a tube similar to tooth paste and is relatively easy to apply. I believ you can buy the drip rail mouldings from companies such as Skandix or VP Autoparts, all depends how much you want to spend on it. Probably best to protect with 2 or 3 layers of masking tape and dont remove them. Please note, Im no expert but this is how I would deal with it myself.

I measured the outside of the gutter and it is 12mm, inside 10 give or take.

Edit: Might not work as it needs to bend in the wrong direction.

Is this the same on the 740/940? It's just seam sealant? I got a bit of rust appearing on the gutter.
