Anyone got a spare one around they would want to part with?

Potholes, I hate potholes.

Yep had one do exactly same thing on a monster pothole in Kellyville 20 years ago.

Car was brand new. ( 75th anniversary edition - got to take my pick out of three sitting in their showroom)

It was like $750 for the wheel and $400 for the stock pirelli

Still have the car and last time tyres got changed the guy pointed out a few lumps and bumps on one and suggested I might think about a new wheel.

But easy to clean and nice looking wheels

Back then NRMA insurance covered it and I think they recovered some of the cost from Council

Menangle Rd at 80kmh, it cracked 2 rims actually.

Yes, I have seen worse damaged repaired no worries

Thanks James that was next on the cards, see if someone will repair them

Seems that it's hard to find repairers who will take the risk of a catastrophic failure and being sued.

Any I have contacted locally charge way too much or sell new wheels as well so price the repair high and offer new replacements.........

I had a crack repair done through my Lebanese tyre guy mates , no comebacks there, cash job , I don't know who welded them .....good job though.

I've used Precision Wheels in Gosford with good results. They can also re-round all the wheels and remove gutter rash and repaint. I did a set of Volans with them and one was cracked and all *five* had flat spots! Cost $1200 or so if memory serves, including repainting.

I'll check them out. Will definitely need re rounding..

Check with your insurer that they will still cover your car if the worst happens because a welded rim failed , be interesting to see what they say

Bought a second hand Volan that had over 200mm of weld in one spot and 100mm in another , it would pay to get an experts opinion on what grade of alloy the wheels are and whether they could cause an accident if the repair were to fracture again , based on the zone where introduced/weld metal meets parent/original metal.

I'll chat to a shop, if they can repair the least cracked one I'll have a set again.

Unless a certain somebody with a red s70 in the backyard agrees to sell me the propus rims...

I asked a shop up in Brisbane once if their welds ever failed, and they said in a mic drop sort of way "we weld rims for top fuel dragsters". Given how soft Volans are, I doubt the weld will be the problem ?

I agree. These rims are weak when not welded. I would expect a new crack rather then a weld failure.

Unless the wheels are put in a oven and normalised the welded area will be a different grade than the rest of the wheel , most failures in welded parts that experience the forces such as wheels will crack right beside the weld in the heat affected zone if it isnt normalised by heat treating.

A statement by a repairer such as was told to you @jamesinc is a throwaway line and doesnt answer the question at all as the drag car goes 400m and is checked over before it goes anywhere again. Do they heat treat? Ultrasonic test?

I had about 25.0mm welded by someone else and im wary of putting my children in a car with those rims........I weld shit for long times , ive seen stuff fail. ( wheels are for sale BTW hahaha)

That looks atrocious to me , done by a backyard amateur.

Snoopy is correct , especially with alloys, normalising is a must as is preheating of a metal that will be put under multi directional loads.

More importantly contact your insurer and ask what is their policy regarding rewelded alloy rims , its a very grey area that can lead to great financial loss and legal issues you just don't need.

Sometimes it's cheaper to just replace the item than go through the unknown.

I scrapped the welded rim , my life , my family and friends lives are more important.

      There's 9 for sale on Gumtree , a group of 5 and a group of 4
