Ahoy!

I find myself needing a 7 seater so I’ve decided it’s time for an xc90 again. I’ve got $10k but that needs to cover buying and in road and stage 0, so what should I aim for? Oh and I don’t want diesel cos it smells. So t5 or 3.2 or v8 or is t6 not bad like I remembered?

Outwardly the V8 seems to hold its value best

I’m leaning v8 having had one before but the price bump is decent with cheap 3.2 being $5k ish and cheap v8 being 8-9k

Every petrol head says no to 3.2 but so many sold they are plentiful and kept by fastidious owners , have better numbers than a T5.

Mate bought BMGs ex mechanic driven XC70 3.2 and must have over 500,000 KLM on it by now, he loves it, he drives to jobs in the country towns with tools and supplies in back, takes his kids other times so seats always in use. He isn't rich, doesn't drive fast, it works for him.

T6 is epic in my V60T6 , when Mark drives it to take it to BMG for services (and I get one of his car collection....sadly not the 240 V8 as yet....) He gets fuel under 9/100K. I'm sitting at low 10s/100K and when frisky just under 12s.

When he had his XC90 V8 he was able to get low , under 10s easily.

*Edit, it had 350,000k when he bought it!

Where do you see them? I'm seeing V8 for high teens and other models even in the 20s.

BMG just sold that white '90 V8 for near 18k, it was gorgeous , fully optioned and near perfect one owner car.

I think you got particularly lucky with your last V8 for the price/condition, and any of the cheap ones now would be a gamble on oil leaks and transmission issues.

6cyls are better on fuel than the 2.5t and the 5 cyls are getting a bit long in the tooth and will likely need a fair bit of maintenance, unless you find one locally that we've been servicing.

6cyl are fairly robust but usually need brake vacuum pump reseal, coolant hoses+thermostat housing, engine/torque mounts. Rear drive belt is due around 10 year mark and may aswell do that+tensioner/water pump and alternator clutch/coupling as part of the stage zero also a set of ignition coils.

Assuming this isn't gonna be your daily commuter into Canberra?

Yeah, not a daily, probably a weekly trip in and out of Canberra with occasional Sydney/coast trips and towing a trailer to the tip

Is sounding like 3.2 6cyl is generally the go

Only thing that went wrong with the t6 was the 4 speed gm box

With updated software and a us supercharged 3.8 v6 rebuild kit the trans will out last the rest of the car

Just do a 4wd delete on them via removing the extra drive shafts

Also... I have enough spare bits to keep you going forever

The newer 3.2 has the 6 speed TS80 box not the GM.

all the more reason to ignore the fejord stupidity

Great gearbox, it learns your style, snappy as when in the left gate or manual. Service it, put oil cooler on it if needed, no big issue that can't be circumvented by maintenance..

It can't be built for more power or torque like the gm box can

        But as a commuter..........

And P* is more as is Adam Peterson's XC60T6 with big turbo, injectors, fuel pumps and Hilton tune, by all accounts it's aggressive and very very fast, the stories about that gearbox are just that.......

And, Level10 have made a valve unit for it already (Vasyl Bos on FB and insta, big power car).

I'll have a look around at the t6's too, they seem a bit rarer now than the 3.2.

I have a ‘12 3.2 for daily driving and it’s great. With just short trip town driving it gets 12L/100k, when I tow a Jayco hawk behind it on longer trips it gets 13L.

When I test drove a few there was a huge difference in the feel and power of a well maintained engine and not. Mine likes a regular oil change.

A reason to choose the 3.2 is that parts are easily available from FCP and apparently Land Rover.

The engines were made in a LR factory to Volvo spec. As Ford owned all those brands incl Jaguar at the time many parts were shared.

Unfortunately some parts were cost cut but you can buy LR replacement parts that are superior like the Haldex bearing that fails. Crazy cost cutting that costs US later.

I am sitting on 10.4/100 at present T6 at over 220,000 kilometres. Mostly city freeway and suburban to and from work. Worst when I fang it is just under 13s.....Running 30% ethanol to 70% 98 fuel kicks it higher but ohh my, the extra power!

@egads (she/her) , if you can find the year model that has twin turbo D5 look seriously at it.....Sure, I dislike sitting in our S80D5 at lights in summer with window down for the smell but then any time in city I always keep windows up and recirculation on as I don't want to breathe traffic fumes anyway, my health is too precious.

Alternative is other D5 with P* tune then add a TDI TUNING box or other tune to get rid of lag and better power.
