  • WTB 240 Power Steering Rack

Hi all,

I am having some clearance issues with my engine swap (see arrowed part in first pic).

It looks like the power steering rack (second picture) has a lower profile in that area.

According to Anthony Hyde’s page the second picture is a rack from an 1982-86, although mine is an 83… ?

If anyone has one for sale please get in touch so I can test it out!

Thanks!

Chris

Yes the TRW rack certainly bulges out more as it seems to use a screw thread to load the rack vs flat shims of old units.

Volvo had a steering rack exchange system for years, so your vehicle is the beneficiary of this.

Make sure you don’t throw the light weight TRW rack away as its important for someone.

The earlier CamGear design is an option but trimming off the curved edge off the sump cover and filing a mm off the rack protrusion might be enough?

Anthony

@Anthony and OP - Hang onto every 240 power steer rack you can - I was told recently that 240 exchange racks are now NLA from Volvo and they're getting hard to find.

@Anthony do you have any info on how to properly set the preload on a TRW rack? I've not found any greenbooks for them.

Hi James

No information on preload adjustment, I leave that to the company who reco's the rack (eg. Active Power Steering).

On the newer TWR racks there is a plastic screw-in cover over the adjustment section, and the thread is centre punched at ends so it doesnt come out. The recon people have a bit of trouble getting it out judging by the condition of it afterwards.

Sure outer tie rod ends can be easily replaced by home mechanic, other than that in my 240 experience the play develops at the inner tie rods and not in the rack and pinion section. Seal and old boot leaks are another matter and thats where a steering shops genuine TWR refurb kit gives a as new return service.
