  • Verbally agreed to buy a XC60 Inscription but discovered its made in China

Firstly, I have just joined this forum and am glad to meet you all. I live in VIC and previously owned a Hyundai, Lexus and Honda.

We wanted to buy a medium luxury SUV and after test driving a few like the X3 and NX 300, we fell in love with the XC60. On doing research, we realized that the XC60 is so safe and amazing. So we looked around and the wife wanted a particular color and the trim along with the lifestyle pack for the sunroof.

So we agreed to purchase a demo 2021 car from NSW. The dealer asked us to put down a $2000 deposit and I did this with a CC. He didnt send me the contract of sale until the next day. We have not signed anything. I always assumed that the XC60 was made in Sweden at least the ones that come to our shores. Now I learned that its made in China.

I am not generalizing and stating that anything made in China is bad. I also know Geely bailed Volvo out when they almost shut down. I also own a BMW bike made in India but has the same quality.

I guess I am a little disappointed thats all. I just wanted to get your thoughts esp those of you who own this same exact model.

I feel the China made XC60 will be comparable to the Swedish made but somehow it doesnt feel the same. That car is a Swedish car at heart! Wish they kept production there itself.

The other thing that left a sour taste was the $2000 deposit. It should have been $200 or so as per NSW law. I wasn't thinking clearly and even though we will now go ahead with this. I am thinking what would happen if we said we dont want to proceed. Do I get all or some of it back?

I asked a Q in another forum and one guy said "Volvo is CHinese shite" these days. Of course his opinion is ignorant but is that the general perception?

Thanks all.

They do assembly of some XC models in China (I think it's the "inscription" variants) but the rest of Volvo's operations are in Sweden/Europe.

As far as I've heard the quality is fine, I haven't seen an unusual number of complaints about them or anything like that. There are some Volvo mechanics on here who may be able to weigh in with more insight.

I can't speak for the deposit, I suppose it will depend on the stated terms of the deposit (was there a formal agreement?). Businesses are not allowed to make deposits punitive, they are only there to cover business costs if you back out, I don't expect the dealership has incurred anywhere near $2000 in costs but ?‍♂️ not sure.

Most Volvo in the latter days were made in Belgium and i doubt any were made in Sweden in that time , maybe again now since Geely gave them cash and free reign to do what they wished.

The Chinese plant will be the most modern in the world , id rather a China made one than a USA made one for sure.\

ALL the utes in Australia come from Sth Korea now as Thailand lost the manufacturing , how any fool would pay $60,000+ for a tradie ute that never goes offroad is beyond me , buy a SSangyong , they probably build the Jap utes anyway!

The assembly quality out of china is if anything better than Europe because of the higher QA process being used for the time being

Longer term I would expect for the quality to drop some as been counters chase costs as is the norm for all manufacturing in lowest cost regions

The main varrient is the excellence version of the xc90 which is china exclusive assembly

Thanks all. Just wanted to get some thoughts and opinions so all good.

Can't believe I will join the Volvo family soon!

We just bought a new XC40 Recharge Twin EV...when I got the VIN from the dealer I found out it was made in the Geely plant where they make the Polestar 2...I freaked a bit but yeah, the Chinese Volvo plants are modern and have high quality control...so I think it will be fine. Most new Volvos in AUS are coming out of China now except the S/V60 (made in USA)...if in doubt the VIN will give it away. EDIT: V60 not made in USA, only S60 at the moment. New XC90 replacement will be made in USA...what will it be called? Maybe “Embla”...

This is the best way of explaining it. You car is ASSEMBLED in China. The parts made for the assembly are made all over the world to the same standard and shipped to the factories to be put into cars.

Thank you. Makes sense. And the reverse is true as well. For example a BMW X3 assembled in the US has parts from China and India. It is truly a global world.

Update: We have paid the balance on our car and are looking forward to the delivery.
