The Japanese one is the Volvo one just at Volvo prices.
The HEPU one is all metal, it looks to be of quite high quality, it turns easily but not too easily, has a little bit of resistance to it. Im not buying another one so I guess we'll see how it goes haha, Ill let you know in 100,000 kms
Oh can someone tell me the regular change interval on the timing belts... Most cars are every 100,000 but Ive been told this one is every 150,000, I'm not sure if Id try an push that with the aftermarket parts in it, but the aftermarket parts are supposedly 'built to the same quality as genuine' according to the box.
AshDVS;36896 wroteThe only two water pumps I would use are either Aisin or Genuine Volvo - in fact they are the exact same thing! Aisin makes the genuine volvo ones, pumps are identical except for the Aisin boxed pump has the 'Volvo' casting mark ground/machined off and does not come with new bolts.
When doing the serpentine belt, a breaker bar is 'ok' but the serpentine belt tool is better. Depending on the breaker bar you have, it may be tough to get it between the ECU housing and the tensioner. I forgot that I'd loaned mine to someone when I went to replace my belt , so used a breaker bar. I had to remove the ECU and TCU and the housing. grrr.
I'd likely avoid the GMB idler too, with INA or Genuine Volvo being the preference here.
As you mention though, what you have there is bound to be better than the stuff you're replacing.
Have fun and you shouldnt find yourself swearing too much.
** Ensure that the water pump mating surface is CLEAN.
Yeah I knew the Aisin one was the same but my kit didn't have that option, woulda had to step up to the Genuine Volvo kit which was expensive! I think this HEPU will be okay, it looks to be fairly good, it feels fairly good.
Actually, here have some photos of the thing. It's made in Germany according to the box:

Impeller is made out of metal:

As is the rest of it:
I trust basically anything Swedish, German and Japanese, and Volvo is a mix of all 3 haha! I mean my XC is using a genuine Volvo pump, its only like 2 years old and done about 20,000 kilometres and its already shat itself (leaking and whatnot), so in many ways genuine isn't always guaranteed either. In saying that though I will probably replace it with another genuine one haha. I care about that car more than this one.
Yeah Im glad I bought the tool, I think it'll be better. I would have needed to remove the ECU as well otherwise but now I don't.
I have the GMB one in my hand now, I'll give it to you that it doesn't feel as spectacularly built as the other parts do but I think it'll be okay, it feels solid enough, its very easy to turn though. It's only a roller, it doesn't do any tensioning I don't think so I think it'll be fine. Haha and yes, everything else in the car is probably really old. That being said though, no water leaks and all of my belts, tensioners and rollers look fine. It's probably been done recently but I have to fix my oil leak anyway and I feel I may as well be safe and do it all. If in doubt and I think the existing roller is better I might use that but probably not.
And yes, I'll give it all a nice clean up. The paper gasket on the HEPU pump also looks of high quality, quite thick sort of stuff so do we think I need sealant on its own, with the gasket (on either side), or not at all?
This is the gasket:
