Maybe taking the goop off to plastic and putting plastidip on them could make em nicer but will lose the backlights they have then. Same for a lot of controls in the car , that rubberised surface stuff is all knackered , ahh well.
I think you can buy some new ones , IPD maybe but is it worth it?
jaykenneally
All of the rubbery stuff in the V70 is long gone, on the radio, the tranny, all the switches, everywhere, its barely clinging on. I figure, well, at least it all matches! :))
Maybe one day it'll be worth it. Ill see how the thing treats me for the next 3 years I guess haha

This thread has a true life of it's own
jaykenneally
It took off a bit more than I expected it to! Not bad for a thread about a base model V70 haha
Ex850R
You like to talk here and not get any work done i suspect..... :D
jaykenneally
Im too broke to get work done on any car at the moment haha, waiting for a few pay checks to come through and to get rid of the 850 for scrap value and then i can actually do things. V70 has sat in my driveway for a week and I don't think Ive even started it. Its low on petrol so Im not wasting it haha. Speaking of petrol, the 850 has half a tank, half a tank that it doesn't need to get it from my backyard to the tow truck. Drain hole anywhere? Ill put that stuff in the V70 (the old V70 obviously).

JeremyK;29662 wroteyeah if i see one at the wreckers ill grab it but 168% of the time someone has beaten me to it. Must be a common fault haha. Again Im willing to hack two broken ones with a soldering iron and see what happens. And no issues with the interior lights as of yet.
I have got a spare. It came off my parts car, which was generally in well maintained condition (except for the areas damaged from the crash :-) ), but I haven't tested it. Its yours if you fix me up for postage, just send me a PM.

For the price of postage Im willing to risk it! Sent you a PM :)

The old '70 you can have a go at fixing?
It is satisfying to do stuff , learn off the net when stuck or talk to guys here to get pointers and its fun , usually fun trying to find tools I swear the fairies move and hide that I use one day and can't locate the next....
jaykenneally
yeah ill be working on the older v70 first, learn off that and get familiar with it and then start with the XC.
Ive already had to buy a heap of specialist tools cos this car likes to be different haha.
And I know what you mean, my tools disappear all the time as well :/
Vee_Que
No specialist tools for these cars I thought, just torx bits which are on most cars now, and the hub nut tool...
Fuel, find where the fuel line is, put hose to put fuel into jerry cans, then pull out fuel relay and short to run. But if the fuel is older than 2 months, not worth it IMO.
jaykenneally
Hahah I guess I classify a torx bit as a specialist part then lol. I didn't have them before. I had to buy a 36mm socket for the driveshafts as well and that thing was a pain in the ass to find.
And yeah, I thought id just disconnect the fuel line and run the starter non stop hahaha but thats probably a better idea, thanks!

I have found the essential Uni-student repair manual for Jay's XC70.

Cable ties
jaykenneally
WD40, Duct Tape and Cable ties are the three things that keep most of my cars in order hahaha

Tore my engine in the old V70 apart to fix up the PCV system (all the hoses were long gone). Took the rocker cover off as well, cleaned everything up, have put it back together today an it is running beautifully! Purrs like a kitten, only much quieter I can barely hear it now! Very pleased with my first decent Volvo service haha.

Did you lift the cam cover without removing the belts?
jaykenneally
Yeah the belts weren't in the way. The fuel pipe was though but it also pushed out of the way. Didn't even have to disconnect it #winning
