Picked up my new (well, they look "renewed" to me but I don't care) from Action Driveshafts in Dandenong today. They look really sweet! Took tomorrow off uni so I can get this beast fixed!

I have updates!

So an entire days worth of work has seen us replace the following:
2x Driveshafts (new)
2x Wheel hubs (from the 850)
2x Brake discs (from the 850)
Front brake pads (from the 850, not much better but at least they don't squeal as much)
ABS Computer (from the 850)
2x ABS sensors (from the 850, cleaned them up)

So basically, the driveshafts are in, and are sweet, so quiet now, drives nicely, needs a wheel alignment pretty badly though, we had to swap the discs/hubs (we did them together) because the old ones got torn to pieces, and the old brake pads squealed and the 850s didn't so I just swapped them anyway, still squeals a bit here and there. By the looks of things my brake lines my need doing, and the brakes need to be bled as its a little spongy, so i might just either pay someone to do it all or figure out how to do all that myself...

We swapped the ABS computer, the V70s did indeed look cooked, but it didn't solve the light, so we looked at the sensors. Both were covered in grease, dirt, mud, dust, metal shards, everything. I decided not to even bother with them and used the 850's. The 850s were in much better nick, although they had a bit of grease on them, a quick blast with degreaser had them looking new. We replaced them and the light still didn't go away. Sure enough though, I took the car for a drive around the corner and the ABS light turned off and the ABS seemed to start working!

So all in all, good days work! The driveshafts/joints feel and sound really good!

They sound alright actually, I jumped on the front end and couldnt hear anything, took it for a drive and no knocks, plenty of speedhumps in my area, i crashed into one of them, i forget how low this car is compared to the Cross Country haha.. In contrast the 850 is now the clunkiest, noisiest most unstable thing Ive ever been near... It sways not only up and down but side to side as well! Its a somewhat traumatic experience just to move the thing hahaha!

I just remembered I lost a bit of tranny fluid when removing the driveshafts (don't know why, car was jacked up on an angle so maybe thats why), anyway, its gone from full to on the Low line so I need to top it up... My car doesn't have a manual and Im not sure if it uses the same as the 850 (which I can't find in the manual anyway) so was just wondering what kind of tranny fluid is it supposed to use. Likely that whatever is in there is either the original one or who knows what....

You guys do roadies down there don't you? Cos Ill probs get it done through you guys, maybe get it serviced while I'm there haha.

Anyway, more updates, removed the roof lining and sunroof and still couldn't find my leak, but gave the sunroof a nice oil and refit the outer seal anyway, cleaned up the drain hoses (none were blocked, just dirty), and refit the sunroof, still expecting it to leak, but I put the hose on "SOAKER" mode and had it on there for ages and not a drip through the roof. Last time it only took like a second to come through so it is an improvement at least! It opens and closes so much nicer now as well!

Then it was just a process of reassembling, took me all morning but cars interior is mostly back together.

I managed to figure out how to remove the timing cover (so much easier than any other car Ive ever had... I like this Volvo!!) and my timing belt looks okay actually, no cracks in it, doesn't look perished, maybe a bit thin I don't know how thick they are supposed to be, but I got some photos:

i know its impossible to predict if/when a timing belt will fail but to me this one looks like it has some life left in it... Thoughts?

Unless you have evidence of it being replaced then change it , not expensive compared to stuffed top end and piston or two OR it takes out the water pump and you cook it , ex$y either way.
Replace water pump and idlers etc while there , they can destroy the cam belt too when they fail , end of motor. Happens too often than not so fix em and be safe and peace of mind..

All good points.ive done the timing belt on the Telstar but that was only one camshaft not two like this one, and I think the Telstar is much more forgiving (it was one notch out and still ran perfect), how hard is the 2.5 20v engine in my v70 to do? It looks pretty tight but no worse than the Telstar I would think.

Its actually quite easy but access makes it trickier than it otherwise would be.
Belts are cheap.
Aisin or genuine volvo only for the water pump and use decent aftermarket or genuine tensioners.

Yeah... Maybe I could do a practice run on the 850, worst case scenario is I kill that motor, best case scenario is I learn some shortcuts or whatnot. The V70 needs a GOOD service anyway, might just tear it all apart and fix everything...
