No problems. There are 2 imperatives.

1. Do not use lubricant of any sort on the bead of the tyre.
2. If they are not seated perfectly do not drive on the tyres. It is quite easy to get them seated correctly after they are fitted (even if they don't seem to be sitting right) but once you have driven on them and they slip out they will be rubbish.
Thanks. I think I'll have a go at these myself. I might go buy an air compressor then as I don't think I want to be using the bike pump for this task. After watching some youtube clips I can see a bit of deflating and inflating is involved.

Hey could you tell me about those wheel trims you have? As you have deeper rims up the back then are you using deeper trims there and using standards up the front? Reason I ask is that I'm going 5.5" deep wheels up the back and 5" up the front. Best staggered look I can get without re-barreling.
The lip that the trim attaches to is the same regardless of the rim width, you can use the same trims all around.

How's the 164 going?
I can assume well. He's brought it to the national meet this weekend.

Damn both those look good. Good to see the 1's sticking together.

@1971_144GL The jaffa's front bumper sticks out half a mile like my current and old 74' 145's. Wonder if the 142 of 74 like yours normally has the front bumper closer to the body. Could be a sports feature?
The fat bumper of 74 would be due to that US rule for sure.

Ok this is interesting.. Just googled the 1974 142 and the front bumpers are all set closer in than the 144 and 145. Why is this so!?

Perhaps the 142 being lighter it doesnt need as much cushion room on impact?

Or it's modified?

My early 142 has not only the early small bumpers, we also shortened the mounts. Brought the bars 1.5" closer to the body
All 140 body styles in 74 had the same bumper and mounts, it was due to the US laws.

The mounts are easy to shorten.
Rob, the atlas white walls.. Have you ever had any dark staining coming through spoiling the white? I have some and seems to line up with some tyre marks and patterns underneath from the tyre.
I think I have found the problem with my white walls.. I just found this after a quick google..

"i once put a set on a brand new set of white all bands (flappers) on to brand new set of steel radials.
The oil from the tyres leeched out of the tyre into the flappers leaving ugly brown stains on the white wall bands. Ruined them
The experts at the times said you new a good few moths of solid use to dry out the tyres"

Time to raise this thread from the dead.

Have barely driven the car since taking it to the National Rally back in May last year.

In May this year Historic Winton is honouring 50years of the Volvo 164 (amongst other things). They have invited owners of 164s to attend for free to display cars and do a couple of parade laps on Sunday.
This is exactly 1 week after the Supercars are at Winton so I have decided I will head down to Vic for a couple of weeks to attend both.

As such it is a time for the car to get a bit of love, going to clean up a few things, make a couple of modifications (hopefully improvements) and probably go for a couple of minor cosmetic changes.

List of jobs (subject to change)

Replace/upgrade the alternator
Replace/upgrade the headlights
Fix minor p/steering leak and replace p/steering hoses.
Replace all of the cooling system hoses.
Replace the dodgy indicator switch and flasher unit.
Fix the heater controls (vacuum leak or similar causing it to not work properly)
A couple of cosmetic changes to the intake manifold/throttle
Mods to the front seats (I don't like the bases)
Steering wheel change/mod
Gearbox change (add a 5th gear)
Replace the clutch
Overhaul/replace the rear axle/diff bearings
Replace the uni joints/centre bearing
Replace the rear control arm bushes
Modify (slightly) the rear floor to prevent the tailshaft touching
Probably go for a slightly different look with new wheels and tyres.
cosmetic upgrades to the tail lights and front indicator lenses.

The aim is to have this all done in time to drive down to Benalla on approx 15th May. Giving me 14 weeks.

Good luck with the list Rob, if anyone can do all that it is certainly you with your work ethic!
Can't wait to see the new beasty.
Well you better get your act together as that's not much time for that list.

Are you going to find an overdrive for the gearbox or just replace it altogether?
I was talking to Peers today and GLT haven't done a 4sp auto into a 164 but they did put a 5sp Celica box into one.

Will you drive it down to Benalla or trailer it?
