Hey guys. I'm in urgent need of x3 valve shims at 3.80mm.

I'm putting together a fresh engine with a new camshaft during my 2 weeks off work and would love to have this done before I go back. Will pay for express, overnight etc.

Cheers

PM me.

2 x 3.8 in the kit.

Thanks guys.

I called by my local cylinder head reco guy today and he had a small handful of volvo shims. I measured them quickly while I was there. They should work. I'll confirm tomorrow.

Hi Guys,

This is about valve shims and tools for B230F. But first... I'm new to the forum and 240 ownership. My last Volvo was 122S Amazon sedan that eventually rusted away. I've just inherited a 1990 240 GL B230F automatic. No service records, so Im doing a lot of preventative maintenance.

Question is: where can I get the valve shims (not sure what I need yet) and the tool to depress shim buckets. Any suggestion most welcome.

Thanks

Ian

First check your valve clearance, if within range, no adjustment necessary

cold engine: 0.30-0.40mm (0.011-0.015”)

I have spare shims if you need them

This tool is on ebay.

If you don't have access to the tools, you can take the cam off (which means removing timing belt). It's not super difficult but obviously easier if you have the tool. If you're servicing the timing belt anyway, though...

Also assume you will need a new valve cover gasket. If you do remove cam, cam seal also.

Personally I'd pull the cam anyway because under the shim buckets you will find brittle remnants of valve hushers! Every time!

    Hi James,

Yes I am planning to replace timing belt, so will do valve shims then. Any idea where I can get new valve hushers?

    cheers

My view on hushers is to remove any traces left and do not replace. It doesn't take long for them to flatten out and no longer serve any purpose.

After that they eventually fall apart and go down into the sump where they are sucked up into the oil pickup screen. There isn't enough material to notably restrict the oil pickup, but undesirable all the same

Good to know, but I do like a quiet engine, even if its only temporary

Just make sure you do the clearances before installing the hushers.

    Thanks James,

I've cleaned out the crumbling old hushers and measured clearances. Mostly in spec!

I measured mine at 0.018" and went "close enough".
