You're previous mechanic is right about the oils if you drive on a freeway all day long. In stop start driving like your car is doing you want to do it more often. Have you been checking your oil regularly?
jaykenneally
Yeah thats what I thought but I did tell him it was a city car. Im actually aiming to do it every 5,000 with as much city driving as I do but Ive just been so broke that I ended up sticking to the service sticker. And before you say it, I was going to get it serviced within like the next week :( So close haha.
I checked the oil a few days ago actually and it was still full, this car has never had an oil leak prior to today so somethings blown.

Big shout out to the boys at Berry Motor Group for turning my car around so quickly, basically had it done in the day. Picked it up this morning. Breather box was blocked and pushed out a cam-seal, had both of those things plus new oil and filter put in it for $440. Surprisingly cheap. At least I have my car back! Now just to hurry up and get the other one registered so I can shelve this one and save up to get it really properly fixed.

Called it. Just wish I'd posted about it.

I was really surprised to find out that the PCV was blocked. I trust Mark when he says it was but it still surprises me. Careful owner, full Volvo history. I reckon the damage may have been done at the last service at my old mechanic. Probably almost would have been better to do it myself. I think with oil changes from now on I will do them myself and get them done every 5,000 so this doesnt happen again. Just glad that no major damage was done like in the 850.
Philia_Bear
The volvo servic interval is 2x what it should be
The pcv is going to clog every 60-200k regardless of service history
jaykenneally
So wait, how often is good for an oil change for a car that does mainly city driving at the moment? I think 10,000 isnt often enough.
And I suppose thats true. The breather box isnt that hard to get to I dont think. It wasnt on the older model, I already cleaned it out, so I think its probably one of those things thats easy enough to check every so often, and I probably will do so when I gain some confidence in servicing this thing myself
Vee_Que
On trucks we change PCV filters every service now on current model trucks, 13' and older we change every other service. Older trucks don't have PCV filters. Scania's have a spinner filter to collect the gunk in the PCV system that need to be cleaned out every oil change too.
Unless you have been taught what to look for on a service, doing it in your driveway is looking for trouble I think. You will miss that bush that's about to fail or driveshaft uni joint etc. And not the mention the ease to check diff oil levels. Not that there is anything wrong with changing your engine oil and filter every 5000kms for lots of stop start driving below 70km/h. I'd recommend using Penrite HPR10 or 15 oil as well.
iceton1975
On my Turbo cars I do every 5000km or 12 months which ever comes first, having 10 cars its every 12 months, using a good oil, you can get some cheap weekend bargins at supercheap, .
On the XC70 P2 range use only Volvo filters no crap, as we have seen these, braking up and getting sucked into the motor
jaykenneally
Id still get the car serviced Alex, probably every 10k, just between services Id change the oil. Saves paying to do it haha.
Thanks for the tip Mark, Ill try do it every 5,000 with genuine parts. Lets keep that PCV cleaaaannnnn

I cant tell if my alternator is dying or not? @tmovlovs pointed out to me that it was generating a little low (something like 13 volts) but ive never had a flat battery.
but recently ive started to notice a few things, the headlights go dim when you rev the engine and let it return to idle (they dim as it returns). The battery wont last long at all if you dont have the engine running but have something like the radio on, and ive noticed the starter motor doesnt seem to have the same punch to it, it sounds like its turning a much heavier motor compared to the other v70, but thats only on a cold start, on a hot start, it starts fast and almost on the first turn.
not sure where to go on that one.
it could be just because i havent been driving the car much at all. since ive got it back from berry ive probably done not even 500 kilometers in it yet, if that. Its flithy as well, parked it under a tree and have barely touched it since. My poor car :(
Vee_Que
Get the battery tested, have you ever replaced it?
jaykenneally
Battery has gone flat a few times thanks to leaving the stereo on for too long. The car also sat around for like 2 months in auction yards and whatnot and it had a half flat battery when I got it. Ill swap it with the other V70s battery and see what goes down.

Do the alternator fix off Mathews Volvo site.
Then do mine too!?

I didnt notice this haha. What alternator fix? Ill look it up cos the car is still doing it on the other battery. I drove another XC the other day (when looking around for mums car), it was the same year with 150xxx kms on it, the mistral green one (it was an overpriced heap of junk not going to lie), its starter motor sounded way more keen than mine. Dont get me wrong my car seems to always starts but just doesnt seem to keen. Motor feels 'heavy' when you start if you get me. Ill compare it to mums when it arrives here haha!
Oh also, got a nice DSLR for my 21st birthday the other day, and got a nice shot of my sweet baby's:
im a happy boy with some happy cars :')

Ooh , what camera?
We Like cameras here too!
The alternator mod , will post if I remember ( not likely I have to say , memory is non existant ATM...)
But its a common mod.
Check earth straps as well.
jaykenneally
Its a Nikon D5300, its red and its so beautiful :')
ah well, ill look into it when I retire the XC in favour of the older V70 as my daily drive. The XC will also have some serious money spent on it next year. Im spending serious money on the old V70 now so I dont have to worry about it for another 10 years haha.
Vee_Que
So you swapped in another used battery? Do you have a multimeter? If not jaycar sell ok ones for $30 that you can test you charging voltage on the battery when the car runs and the battery voltage with the engine being off for a few hours.
