hi i am new to this.
our volvo misfires for about 20 min till it warms up and then seems to run better and i am looking for ideas of what to do next
what we have done
replaced both coil packs about 2 years ago
replaced leads and plugs about 2 years ago
replaced fuel filters one recently and the other about 2 years ago
had the injectors cleaned about a month ago
we accidently put some e10 in it and it has never been the same since not sure if this is related or a coincidence
does the fuel pump usually cause trouble on these cars?
would the e10 have damaged the fuel pump?
is there a simple way to verify if the fuel pump is working ok?
are there particular leads plugs or coil packs that give trouble?
coil packs are genuine, plugs are ngk and they are silicone leads not sure of the brand but would be after market
it was put on a computer some time ago and they said is was misfiring on 2 cylinders but i cannot remember which 2

The entire fuel system is E98 rated, I have an S40 running exclusively on E85
The E10 matters not
What plugs were put into the car? Plat/copper?
Is the car Turbo or NA?
When was the O2 sensor last replaced?
Where in Australia are you based?
nickm
what year? and engine?
Is it hard to start?
I have seen a few with bad fuel regulators.
I had kooky temp sensor on mine that did not throw a code.
egads (she/her)
We had bad connector wiring on one that caused that sort of symptom.

98 model, 2 litre engine non turbo the o2 sensor has not been replaced, based in geelong vic the car started playing up in qld.
not sure about plugs they have three contacts not just the one
pawright
yes it is hard to start

Paul if you aren't confident with diagnosing the problem I recommend George Bellingham at the top of High st Belmont. He's the ex head Volvo mechanic in Geelong, a good bloke too.
pawright
he would like to get paid and as most mechanics these days want to charge over $100 an hour i cannot afford it

Is the car currently in VIC or QLD?
Any plans to come near SYD soon?

Check the FPR fuel pressure regulator, when I was buying a S40 3 out of the 4 cars I tried had hard start problems.....6 or 7 cranks and the needed to use the throttle.
Changed it in the one I got, starts first turn.
Other issues were plugs, temp sensor, and thermostat. The plugs threw a code the other issues did not.
pawright
we are in vic will not be in Sydney till at least 2015 hope to have it fixed by then
it seems that it could well be a fuel issue as you have to crank for a while and then pump the throttle to get it to start the first time and then when you are up and running at times you put the foot down and it almost dies.
this leaves me with 2 possibilities replace the fuel pump or the regulator.
the car has done 220,000 k's can anyone suggest which is most likely to be the culprit? the fuel pump is cheaper on ebay so i might be leaning that way
nickm
Pull the vacuum line on the regulator just after trying to start the car.
crank it 5 or 6 times without it firing.
Then check for fuel in this line. If there is fuel the regulator is faulty.
You want to be sure before throwing parts at the car.
pawright
i have looked at a couple of videos on youtube they show what the regulator looks like and where it is but my engine seems to look a little different i would like to a picture but can't seem to see how
would a car that has done 220,000 k's be at the point where if you replace a part that is not faulty you are simply preventing having to in the near future
i have not done much work on these engines but i know that when i understand them and their layout i will be able locate the problems, please be patient with me as i get up to speed with these engines. rebuilding a holden v8 seems simple in comparison to the more hi tech volvo engine but i will get there
nickm
that is fine it... is under fuel rail cover
I would not replace... most Volvo parts are well engineered
pawright
i have decided to test the fuel pressure to see if it is what it should be if it is then both the regulator and the pump must be ok just have to get the tool i need
pawright
ok so the pressure tested at 43 psi as expected and did not vary even when the engine was revved but i was not able to replicate the misfire possibly because i had already used the car and it was warm. thinking i will try again when it is cold.
if the pressure tested ok when warm is it likely that this is the issue?
nickm
does it hold pressure when the motor is shut down? is there fuel in the vacuum line?
Philia_Bear
Any coolant usage at all?
Any possibility of getting a picture of all 4 spark plugs (I want to see color etc)
Also... looking like I'm in melb in August, I should be able to have some extra time to help you out with it
pawright
it held pressure when the engine was turned off but i did not check the vacuum line
pawright
no coolant usage
may be able to get pics later
