Not quite sure what you mean? Late model as in '73 front? If so it is because I prefer the look of the 73. And wanted injection.

I have since almost convinced myself to fit the early front rather than find later doors and change the tail lights. Either way the 73 interior is much better

'73 is my fave year for 1 series.....so glad my manual 164 is a '73 and so is my 142....

I always thought (along with my self) that the drop centre bumper 164 was more desired. But harder to find. As I've only spotted a couple getting around in Vic.

If it was mine, I'd be going for early front, early tail-lights and early dash, early doors with the 74 door glass.
That's the best combo, IMO - although I could easily live with the quarter vent windows of the earlier doors, and/or the 72+ lift-up door handles.

I do like the early front (and have a couple spare). The early rear is quite ok. I could live with them no problems. I much, much, much prefer the 73 dash.

1. I could swap the doors for '72-'73 type and fit a 73on rear

2. Because this already has the early rear and early door handles, common sense says i whack an early front on it. I still end up with the better dash and windscreen wipers that go the right way...

I seem to be going backwards and forwards on this. Option 1 was my original plan because I wanted it to match my 164. As yet I do not own any '73 doors so that is certainly steering me toward option 2. The urge to make it match the 164 so closely has almost completely passed as well...

I found a bit more time for this one while watching the Bathurst 1000 on the weekend. Managed to get it running and driveable-ish, I think one of the carbs is no good. Steering and suspension is all working the way it should.

Structural welding is pretty much complete, just have to finish a little off from the underside when I manage to get it up on a hoist and a little where the front rails meet the firewall when I get the engine out.

I swapped over a good boot lid and bonnet that I had laying around. Now I can finally get onto some rust repairs and body work. It is not my intention to make it perfect, in fact my latest train of thought is to leave it a bit short of perfect. I have also made the decision to go with 1970 styling, that way i can keep the doors and rear that I have. I have the correct front bumper and grille to suit. Obviously this will mean a mismatched (later) dash and RH swing wipers, that is a big positive in my books, LH swing wipers are annoying and I much prefer the later dash.

Next decision is driveline, perhaps a V8 is in order?? not sure.

LSx and Tremec T56.
Heaps of aftermarket performance available. A standard one makes good power and good economy, it's easily tunable and, while a bit agricultural feeling, the stock Tremec is quite durable.

Dunno how much work would be involved in getting the shifter in a decent spot though.

LSx manual makes lots of sense performance wise but also may be a little more involved than I am looking for on this build.

Volvo V8... per option 1 but more so.

Jag V12. 12 cylinders is excellent but apart from that I see only the negatives of both of the other options. BMW or Toyota V12 are also options but a LSx would be easier, cheaper and would go better.

1UZ is a pretty good option also.

Despite common sense telling me that the Rover is not the best choice, I have actually given that some serious thought. Certainly the right choice for as many reasons as it is the wrong choice. A Rover with a cool looking set of carbs could be the go.. Very easy conversion that is for sure.

I've got a rover 3500 v8 sitting in the shed I can measure up if you like. Looks like it might be tight between the chassis rails in a 1 series.

Nope, ends at the flywheel. It's likely going into the 76 245 for dub dub noise value

I should get in contact with old mate who was Rover fanatic for you Rob.
He has gone walkabout as a weld inspector so I lost track of him he uses work mobiles doesn't have his own so hard to find...
Am sure he would have 27 motors and gearboxes!!
