Passed pink slip today! 2 new rear tyres ( go figure ? ) and it sailed through. Historic club inspection booked for Friday morning so fingers crossed I'll have the car registered for the long weekend.

With the cleaned/sealed fuel tank the car now runs like a top once it's warmed up. Definitely needs more timing or something up top but it has great mid range at the moment on 9 psi. It actually has enough torque now ?

Yesterday a mate of mine helped me turn up the TD05 and lean it out a bit at the top end, the car goes WAY better now and is actually fun to drive, so I treated it to a wash.

That should be the car sorted for a while, I'm looking forward to chopping some surprised p-platers in Toyota 86's ?

Thanks mate, and nope! Because a turbo was a factory optional extra on the 240 (though not for this year model) my understanding is you can put all the bits on without needing engineering.

Thanks mate, and nope! Because a turbo was a factory optional extra on the 240 (though not for this year model) you can put all the bits on without needing engineering.

This isn't completely true. It will need to at the minimum have a new blue slip done for it to change the induction type to turbo. I went through this with the 245 that I turboed. You aren't using the factory manifold in the factory setup which depending on who does the paperwork will pass as a change of identity or will require engineering.

The paperwork on my 245 now says it is a turbo but I used largely factory components. When I turboed my 240 sedan it required certification as in 1987 there were no turbo models available and the VSCCS at the time didnt allow for that type of swap without engineering. Now it is more flexible if using factory components.

That being said, I drove my 240 turbo for about 2 years before submitting it for engineering. I didnt ever get hassled but had I gotten picked up it would have been taken off the road and had I had an accident my insurance would have been voided. Id atleast ask a blueslipper you trust to see what they think and if they think its ok then get the details updated to cover yourself.

That's good news, I have been under the impression that I will need an engineers certificate for mine. I have swapped a B230ft into my 242GT. I still may end up having to get one as I have also fitted a Haltech ECU. be a good saving if I can avoid it though.

Well the first big test of the new turbo setup was today when I took the car to a skid pan event at Sydney Motorsport Park, and I'm happy to say absolutely nothing went wrong with the car!

2 other 240's were in attendance which was very cool.

The first session was a disaster, I just couldn't get the car to slide at all even with the extra torque, so my mate and I swapped the new tyres onto the front and put the older tyres on the back, pumped the rears up to 45 psi and that did the trick. This thing is absolutely amazing on the wet skid pan, turn in and it immediately oversteers, then the turbo torque just wafts it along in 2nd around 3000-5000 rpm, amazing.

Well, I advanced the ignition timing - WHAT A DIFFERENCE!

The car doesn't feel like it's being held back at full throttle anymore, as soon as it hits full boost it just freight trains away.

I'd like to advance the timing even further but not sure what a safe level would be; I don't have any detonation detection so am a little worried I'll blow it up. The AW70 is also holding up well but I don't want to push it too much more, I already feel I should back off on gear changes to help it cope.

Have you done an accumulator mod on the transmission? Lucas oil transfix additive + synthetic ATF helps the clutches too

I haven't done anything to the gearbox yet, I was planning on finding an AW71 and doing the mod to that. I was under the impression than even a modded AW70 is on borrowed time so an AW71 is a better bet.

Perhaps put a good trans fluid cooler on it and give it the best quality fluid , do regular changes, if there's no filter put an external one on too.

All this gives you extra volume of fluid so that's always good as well.

For historic rego in NSW you don't ever get a blue slip, only a pink slip and club inspection. Mine is registered as a turbo model.

The RMS website says period correct modifications are allowed, so I would consider a turbo from another Volvo and an intercooler the same size as the Group A replica to come under that banner.

No problem, was just providing information for others who may be reading this thinking the reasoning of "Volvo sold turbo 240s so its legal" will be universally accepted when that isnt always the case. It certainly wasnt the case when I put together a 240 turbo in 2010 using all standard parts. No insurance company would cover it until it was engineered. No legit pink slip place would pass it at the time either. When I completed the turbo swap in the 245 in 2018 I had followed the VSCCS for self certification. I still had to demonstrate to my blue slipper that it was all factory or close to factory parts before they would update the details. The same was for Shannons who told me to have it safely insured that it needed to be checked under self certification by a blue slipper.

I dont have any club rego cars so the rules may be different than that of a full rego car.

It is definitely easier these days that it was then. At the time I did my first 240 turbo there were only about 4 other 240 turbos I knew of and all of those were engineered too.

Just a small update, I've been driving the car with the turbo setup and so far it's been dead reliable. The gearbox must be in very good condition because it's not showing any signs of distress.

However I think I'll be selling the car because I don't think it's really what I'm after. It handles like an absolute barge, the auto is garbage, it uses tonnes of fuel and, really, I'd have to spend HEAPS of cash and time fitting coilovers, swaybars, a manual swap (T5 or similar), and other mods in order to get it to a place where I would consider it "fun".

Considering my favourite cars I've owned to date have been a couple of MX5's and an S13, the 240 really isn't in the same category. TBH I find it more fun to drive my wifes stock Mazda 2 than the 240 due to the light weight and far better handling.

Anyway, not trying to shit on the 240 on a Volvo forum ? but I don't think it's the car for me.

What do we think, after I replace the damaged passenger doors, the car would reasonably go for? I won't be trying to get top dollar but it's a solid 125k km car with a good turbo setup.

Barge sums the 240 up well. Underpowered sloth is another. You can't break engines if the stresses are low. There's a good reason they do such big mileage (and several as to why they were discontinued after making so many).

Well it's been a fun (nearly) 3 years of ownership but it's time to let the beast go.

It's been sitting for a long while and one of the injectors has seized/gummed up, so it's running on 3 cylinders with the occasional extra pop out of the 4th. I'll just copy the ad from FB Marketplace:

This car has been a blast to own, goes hard, doses very loudly and has been very reliable, but with a 6 month old I don't have the time and motivation to replace the stuck injector.
If it doesn't sell I'll wait until I have time to get it fixed up, but really I'd prefer it to go to someone who will enjoy it.

Looking for $5,000 as it sits.
