Hi,

To start, I don't know much about cars or even Volvos specifically. I would appreciate any advice or guidance.

Last year I purchased a 2012 xc60 from a friend and it has been running well and has been in great condition (only 60k km when purchased). Last week i received "low transmission performance" warnings and after inspection from the dealership it requires either a new transmission quoted at $11k or that the existing gear box and parts are fixed up and that could cost $7k. Although the car seemed like it would be roughly valued at $20k prior to this issue, neither option seems viable.

If I don't pay this, what would be my best option? Do I then need to put it for auction or do people purchase cars in this shape on car sales/ gumtree etc?

Sorry for these basic questions, I am new to Oz and don't know where to go from here. Just appears to be horrible luck for what was a great car with low Kms. Cheers

Do you know what engine you have in your xc60?

I don't have the manual with me but it's 2wd automatic and my records indicate it's engine capacity is 1999 - hope that narrows it. Thanks!

You probably have the ford ecoboost engine and ford powershift gearbox.

Find a nearby transmission specialist and they should be able to rebuild your gearbox for significantly less that the 7k the volvo dealer has quoted you.

Where are you located? Some of us here could tell you where would be best.

Northern beaches, Sydney! Was going to try col Voss transmissions as they seem to be the closest and rated ok on google. Appreciate any other recommendations. Cheers

I guess ask if they do the ford dual clutch or powershift repairs as its same gearbox and motor in the Ford.

Should be plenty as its a common problem......

Which dealership?

Besides getting the warning message, have you had any indications that the transmission isn't performing as it should? A minor glitch in the electronics (or a dying battery) might have thrown up the message when there may be nothing really wrong.

I am also on the Northern Beaches and, although I am not a mechanic, just a life long Volvo enthusiast, I have a Volvo Vida/Dice system that can further analyse your issues.

I'd be willing to come to you and run the diagnostic program and see what we can see and learn.

I don't know much about the Col Voss shop, but did stop in there once and the were very forthcoming with advice and knowledge. If you go down that path, I'd be interested in their service and costs.

I appreciate the offer. Yeah the car was actually revving up mid drive really high and would not accelerate at all consistently on a few occasions. I am typically skeptical of dealerships (I went to Mosman in this case) but it seemed to me there was an issue with the car beyond the error.

I’ll let you know if I go with Voss and any additional details.

My brother inlaw used to be a service manager at largest country dealership in Victoria , multi franchise with Euro luxury brand included.

He started his working life as a mechanic.

They wanted him to cheat, lie and basically steal from service customers , he left as soon as he could , a family to support in his mind. He now owns a very successful truck parts business due to his honesty.

So yes, beware the dealer. But yes, you hsve a dead gearbox! Google Ford Powershift issues, its the gearbox (and motor) you have in your XC60 as Ford owned Volvo at the time they designed these era of cars.

Luckily my V60 2011 has the Landrover T6 motor and a somewhat maligned Aisin gearbox that Audi and others also use. Ford ruined Volvo

    ...

The dual clutch is known as the Ford powershit for a reason

Everything described sounds like failure to engage gears which is a normal mode of failure on them

Find a shop that deals with the Ford dual clutch trans including the upgraded clutch packs and other things available for it

Engine and trans are pure Ford, electronics and software are Volvo

The dealership ended up being transparent in the end and recommended I go somewhere else to get it fixed for a fraction of the costs. I found Col Voss to be very helpful and they replaced the dual clutch plates, steel plates and cover. Apparently my cover became damaged somehow which they didn't really understand. All up it was about $3,100 and the car is running well.

Good news. Now, back to my transmission problems.

I am getting 2-3 shift flares when making slow-ish turns to the right. No problem going left.

Sometimes, it kicks hard when automatically down shifting from 3rd to 2nd as I come to a stop.

I feel like I have to "baby" the car in town.
