2007 XC70 2.5T

I hear a distinct click (as opposed to a clunk) when, in first gear, I go from negative torque to positive torque and from positive torque to negative torque.

I just changed the transmission torque mount (which was worn out), hoping that would make a difference; but sadly, it did not.

If I had to guess, I think it sounds like a looseness in the splines that connect the axle shafts to the innards of the transmission (or maybe at the wheel hub).

Anyone else have this?

Google axle ping on Volvo's.

You probably just need to remove the driveshaft bolt and add some thread locker/loctite

    Or what about these:

I bought 4 new axle bolts from Volvo and some Chemtools Rapidstick™ 8243 Threadlocker (blue).

If I were to loosen the bolts, jack up each wheel in turn and back the bolts out, would I then be able to push the driveshafts inwards somewhat and then, from behind apply some of the thread locker to the splines before drawing the shafts back into the hubs and finally using the thread locker on the bolts and then torque to spec (35Nm +90 degrees to the fronts and 50Nm to the rears)?

And if you think it might help with the problem stated in another of my threads of occasional ABS fault codes and whilst I have the wheels off, I will double check the condition of the reluctor rings, clean off the "eye" of the ABS sensors and check the condition of the wiring.
