Early/small brakes vs the larger brakes fitted to the majority of cars.

The L is for left.

As best as I can see, the small brakes are identical to Proton Waja, and almost identical to Proton Satria GTi except for the stud pattern drilled into the brake rotors (Satria = 4x100, compared to Volvo/Waja 4x114.3).

I believe the Phase 2 has 6 airbags. They retained seat airbags and added side curtain airbags. The seat airbags are electrically triggered in the Phase 2 (Phase 1 and 1.5 are mechanical). As a result, putting Phase 2 seats in a Phase 1 is a no-no if you want the bags to work. This is a shame because almost every 1/1.5 I've seen has munted front seats. The 'Bridge of Weir' leather is the real deal, but that means the seats needed proper leather care and some sun protection, which most never got. Although the Phase 2 seats seem to be lower quality leather in theory, they have held up better in practice.

They also redesigned the front airbags, so swapping wheels could be risky too.

Phase 2 got ESC on top of ABS; 1's are ABS only except for Volvo's early form on (I think only) Phase 1 T4s.

I believe that only the early cars had the mechanical triggered airbags.

Phase 2 has two curtain airbags on each side (ie: front and rear) which suggests that they don’t have them in the seats anymore.

I will pay more attention next time I am doing anything related.

There's a fair bit of info on the UK Volvo Club website, mainly because people have wanted to swap interiors and have run into seat airbag/SIPS compatibility issues.

Great work putting all that information together.

For the front guards I think only the T4 had the black plastic extensions on the phase 1. Phase 2 front guards are wider because of the increased track width.

Late phase 2 models had a different instrument cluster.

The limited edition Super Touring models came out in 2000. They did not have the egg crate grille - those grilles came out in late phase 2 models only (MY2003). The wheels are called Ares. Only three colours were offered: yellow, black and silver.

The plastic guard extensions/lips were on some other variants as well, for example ours is a NA V40 but high spec SE (sunroof, sub etc) and has the fronts, along with the rear arches and sills

@johna , best as I can tell, the plastic on the wheel arches was standard on T4s and was a commonly chosen option on other cars.

I wrecked an early, low spec 2.0 V40 that had them.

Yeah, looks like I was wrong about the flares. I've since looked at a few photos and all but the earliest models seem to have them. Maybe they came as part of the suspension changes they made with the introduction of the T4 in 1998.

I'd like to know how much Mitsubishi Evolution driveline is interchangeable. I'm about 500% sure this isn't the first time you've thought of such things...

4G93 came factory fit, 4G63's fit in the hole.

4G63's only come in 4WD form... But the S40's rear cradle is all Mitsubishi anyway isn't it?

I've spoken to Paul Nelson about this numerous times and he hasn't flat out ruled it in or out as it's a Charisma and not a Lancer, but also... I'm assuming it's not as easy as unbolt subframes and then bolt subframes in.

Have looked at the possibility of B4194T powered Mirage. Not sure about the lower gearbox mounts, but the upper engine/gearbox mounts look like they will bolt straight in.

Rear suspension is Mitsubishi FWD - but the AWD conversion is apparently "just" a matter of unpicking welds and welding the new bits in.

My gut feeling is that an Evo4+ S40 would definitely be do-able.

Having said all of that, back when I owned 4G63s and such, I often wondered about how entertaining a NA 4G63 powered CC or CE wagon would be - but then I remembered that it would be a difficult way to make a slower V40 T4...

This is brilliant thanks mate! Looks like I have a black super touring version based on the wheels and fake carbon interior trim. Shame I need to move it on for a P plate legal car for the kids!

Depending where you are, the T4 may be P Plate legal, I know it changed from banned to legal in Victoria

As best I can tell from the SA website (https://mylicence.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/163578/High_Powered_Vehicles_Notice_April_2015.pdf) the auto version is allowed but not the manual ?

@johna The PDF you linked has 2 schedules. Schedule 1 appears to be the banned stuff, and is very short. Schedule 2 is the permitted stuff, and is the long list. It includes the T4 in all forms. Looks legal to me, so of you'd rather not unload it perhaps double check with SA motor reg.

Cheers Chris I may be blind but the only 2000 S40 T4 I can see on the permitted list is the auto version?

Also getting rid of 2006 XC90 V8 for the same reason, 2010 or later is ok though, same engine, same car, stupid rules!

You could be right. The wagons refer to both auto and manual but the sedans don't. I'd be inclined to check with the authorities if the absence means yours is banned, not banned or they just haven't heard of it...

I happened to come across an old Manheim auctions listing for a 2002 V40 T4 manual! I have never seen a phase 2 T4 in Australia before and thought they had been discontinued (I have a Volvo press release from April 2001 saying the T4 was discontinued).

I looked up the VIN in VIDA and it shows as a MY2003 T4 with B4204T5 engine so it really is a T4.

Must be the rarest V40 in the country. Wish I had seen it when it came up for auction...
