[QLD] Wanted: Fuel tank to suit 79 240

still can be bought new

From the dealer? Might call up tomorrow to see how much they’re flinging them for.
Try Rockauto.com for a new one maybe. I know they have them. Not sure about dealer as I think the genuine Volvo tank is discontinued. Tank from a 79 is interchangeable with a 93 IIRC, so you should be good if you can find one from a newer 240. The filler neck design changed a bit from year to year so if you find a used one get it complete with the filler neck.
Other options eBay

Good used one from a later 240 might be the go if you want to save a bit of money?
Skandix may not be too bad? Approx $226AUD, but not sure about shipping. Not sure whether their flat-rate shipping option covers it due to the XXL size.

Thanks @carnut222
Good options there. I’ve inquired with Skandix on postage price. Could still end up being cheaper than having one restored. Just the dip alone is 300 odd through the tank restorer.

IMHO you'd be crazy to pay $300 to fix up an old tank. If you were down here I could sort you out with a late-model 240 tank no worries! :)

Haha I work on old Volvo’s! Definitely crazy. But yeah, now I know they are available new it seems a bit silly. I’m just used to reading about the projects in the classic car mags in England where the first step, if the car has been sitting for years, is almost always to have the tank reconditioned. But they also restore cars with rust in every panel and no floor over there so I guess they aren’t necessarily the best example of what to do.
If this lockdown wasn’t on I’d probably jump in the car and go for a nice big drive to Vic to pick one up from you! Looking forward to some interstate travel again!

Yeah, I mean if the tank doesn't have holes in it and is just a bit scaly inside, then by all means get it hot-tanked and do the internal coating on it to restore it...however I wouldn't bother on one that has holes in it already...

Definitely have to be quite ambitious to try and rescue a tank with holes in it.
Skandix will not ship themselves but are happy to forward me details of a company who I can arrange private freight with.
At this stage, I’ll see if I can work with the tank offered to me by @peterwgpa and go from there. Hopefully it’ll be clean enough to give me the ability to at least make an attempt to get the car going. That’s the bit I’m looking forward to.
