So it's a b21e 76 245dl, it's now m46'd but was auto. car was a friggin mess when I got it but is now almost usable. Took it out for it's first run last night, went 500m then ran rough & died. Wouldn't restart, towed home. It had been fitted with the wrong fuel pump, I swapped it out for a known good kjet v6 pump & new check valve & now it fires up, runs for 5 seconds & sputters out. Has new plugs, leads, cap, rotor, Bosch blue coil, and every suspect vac hose has been replaced or clamped properly.
Can a bad fuel accumulator cause problems like this?
Bit lost as everything appears good.
Thoughts?

Unmetered air? Split in something air wise? Accumulator is only meant to mess with warm start when it goes bad. How long had it sat? Long enough to have terrible petrol and big gummy chunks of crap go into fuel dist/injectors?
egads
Bypassed fuel pump relay to be sure it isn't that?
volvodriverman
Yeah tank is my next thing to dig into. It's sat for at least a year, showing half a tank & I chucked 20l of fresh in yesterday. It now starts & runs rough, won't take throttle as it stops it. Being early it's got only one pump & it picks up out the side of the tank. It's also got an extra plug on the side of the flappy air metering plate thang I'm unfamiliar with.
It's not ignition, definitely fuel & it feels very lean. Fuel filters new too. Gotta be tank side or metering head. Or, like you suggest, an air leak somewhere but I've I've checked it over thoroughly.
Aargh!

Is the replacement single pump hardcore enough to flow the 65psi you need on a single? You are somewhat in luck as i have been researching the crap out of early kjet due to my 145 having something wrong that is in the same ballpark.

Pumps from a kjet b28e 760 & is near new. I believe it's meant to have a bit more capability than the 4cyl equivalent. After running a little while it sounds like the pump is cavitating which is a bit odd.

Gonna check the fuel pressure tomorrow, will have a better idea then.
egads
Hmm, maybe it is accumulator failed closed?
egads
Or almost full of crap?
volvodriverman
I pulled the accumulator off & could blow through it fine. Will have a look in the tank, if it's like the 140s it should have a sock filter on the pickup which could be partially blocked. After that gonna lose the accumulator & chuck my spare 044 pump under it & see what happens.

Sounds like a solid plan.

Who knows whether 2 series wagon & sedan fuel tanks are the same? If it's coming out then one with a pre pump is going back in...
Slowbrick
Split or air leak in the bellows? Our 77 245 wouldn't run with a tiny leak in it. Check that
volvodriverman
Will do cheers

Fuel regulator?
volvodriverman
Ok so with my pressure gauge on the outlet from fuel filter it's pegging the gauge at 140psi...
volvodriverman
Sprayed carb cleaner at everything likely to leak & no sign of issue. I'm thinking it's got fuel pressure but not flow.

Draining fuel tank = lumps lol
egads
Mmmmm, lumps. That'll do it.

Any bright ideas for cleaning out crud in fuel tanks?
