Lots of detail work on Damage today.
12V power socket, and Blu-Tak’d on kitchen timer were both quick and easy jobs.
Slightly more time consuming jobs in this photo, even though they’re not obvious …
First up is the blue vertical support that is just visible behind the red lever on the brake bias valve. The lower part of the dash was flapping around a bit more than I was happy with, so I refitted one of the the two supports.
The OBD2 port holder part was hanging out a bit too close to the driver’s knee so it was cut off. Then I bolted it to the side of the shifter and clipped the port back in.
Also fitted the short shifter I made a few weeks back. There ulterior motive here is that it gives a bit more clearance to the wires coming off the wiper switch (the black toggle switch on the left rear of the shifter).
Replaced the dinky, “flag friendly” rear view mirrors with the originals, because (unlike a khanacross) you actually need to be able to see behind you in the race.
Then onto adding an extra muffler. The only 2.25” muffler I had was this fart cannon… it was going into the middle of the pipe, so the stupid oversized tailpipe was in the way.
This was all going nicely until I realised that I didn’t have enough space under the car to fit it… I will try to find a resonator at a reasonable price on Monday.
I did a bit of experimenting with using my Chinabay platform scales as a corner weight scale.
These numbers are NOT ACCURATE, but they should be indicative. Damage has about 20 litres of fuel, Bloop has about half a tank (30 litres or so).
The scales are rated at 300kg and go to “overload” at 305kg…
I weighed the Lancer first and should have double checked the numbers, but they seem roughly correct - the first weird part is how much lighter the LHR is than the RHR.
The second weird part is that I transposed the two front corner weights when I wrote them down… it had been a long day … and then I repeated the mistake on the Mirage…
So the Mirage is actually:
LHF = 301kg
RHF = ?? (But definitely more than 305kg)
LHR = 130kg
RHR = 162kg.
Total maybe 930kg, which seems plausible.
Lancer is:
LHF = 296kg
RHF = 310kg educated guess.
LHR = 144kg
RHR = 190kg
Total 940kg (which seems very plausible).
Regarding the 310kg educated guess - while it was overloading the scales, it took an incredibly small amount of weight back on the jack to drop it back to the 305kg limit. I experimented with measuring the ride height vs weight on the tyre, and could not measure any difference in height between 305kg and all of the weight on the wheel.
The Mirage repeats the same thing about the LHR being lighter than the RHR, making me think that this actually the case. Presumably due to the fuel tank and filler stuff being on the right, although I would have expected the exhaust to have balanced it out more.
It’s no surprise that the front of the Mirage is heavier, with the larger 4G69 engine and slightly larger gearbox. I ran out of motivation to measure the ride height to make an educated guess on the RHF weight.
I did work out that rocking the car back and forward on the scales will eventually take the side loading off the scale and the reading will be as accurate as it can be.
Definitely not reading too much into any of this, but should be a pointer for when I weigh it properly.
