The Boy & I got the rally car running again this morning: new fuel filter , and extra fuel filter and the injectors from the ratty 1.8 Lancer’s engine.
Here’s some soup from the inlet side of the original fuel filter.
I am wondering if the damage to the filter casing has torn the filter element? Photo doesn’t show it well, but the hex fitting is bent off line.
We proved that it ran, and immediately turned it off. I will try to minimise the run time until the fuel tank has been cleaned out, but at least it can now be driven off the trailer and into the shed.
Onto replacing the fuel pump on the green Mirage. I had drained it last week, so it didn’t take long for The Boy and I to drop the fuel tank out of the car.
This was what I expected to find…
The inside of the tank looked at least as bad as the fuel pump.
We washed it with the garden hose, and added a handful of large nuts to bash and scrape the loose rust inside the tank.
Constant rinsing and shuffling the tank around until we we both bored with it.
This is a small portion of what came out (maybe 5%):
Then added 8 litres of vinegar to the tank, and attached a length of wire cable to the drill…
This is an “interesting” process, where the cable constantly tries to tangle itself up, and I am constantly worried about the end of the cable coming out of the hole and trying to tear my face off.
But it works quite well. This photo shows a bunch of dislodged rust/gunk and two of the nuts that I put in the tank.
Bad photo down the fuel level sender hole, after washing…
Feeling pretty confident that it isn’t going to kill the new pump immediately now.
Here’s the new pump fitted to the bracket.
It’s outside drying out. Will put it back together and back into the car tomorrow.
