  • XC90 D5 engine oil recommendation

What oil is recommended for 2008 XC90 D5
5.8L of 10w50 or 5w40
Penrite hpr10 or hpr5
If in tasmania.... hpr0 for winter only
Valvoline do a low crud building one apparently.
More importantly, change it every six months
I recommend 5w30 C3 rated oil.
All oil brands have online lubricant guides google castrol/penrite/nulon lube guide and punch the vehicle details in.
If you look up the castrol lube guide it suggests castrol edge LL which is 5w30 C3 oil.
C3 oil is designed for diesel vehicles with particle filters a3/b4 are more of a petrol engine rating
17mm also you'll need an 18mm aluminium sump plug washer. The oil filter is 36mm

Any one have any experience with Nulon 5w-30 C3?

I plan to do an Liquid Molly oil flush and the use this one as my final change. auto barn has it on special for 10L for $80.

Nulon oils are good in my limited experience

I have no complaints with Nulon. I alternate between Nulon and Penrite in my fleet depending on what’s on sale.

I will be doing my first service on the my Xc90 D5 2013 with 81K (KM) on the clock. These are my components :

1) Nulon 5W-30 C3 Oil Low Saps . Got 10L $80 dollars online. Volvo VIDA Latest version recommends A5/B5 0-30 which is too thin in AUS. VIDA 2014D recommends A3/B4 standards but I understand that these were updated some time back to the A5/B5. Nulon does make a "European" 5W-30 that sticks to A3/B4 however since its an old standard not sure I want to use it. The Castrol Website in AUD recommends 5W-30 C3 oil. So I decided to go with Nulon C3 similar specs at a cheaper price. I plan to change the oil every 6 months anyways.

2) Ordered some Mann Oil filters for $12 each. Seemed cheaper than the Ryco ones priced at $45. Mann seemed like a good brand so this was a no brainer

3) Cabin Air Filter Mann unit with The Carbon filter. picked it up for $65 this has the air quality HEPA stuff. The dealer usually charges $90+ for these.

4) Mann Fuel Filter, this was $48, seemed ok. Ryco units go for a bit more, not sure if they are worth the extra dosh.

In order to keep my service history, I have told my workshop that I am doin a 6 month interval, they will keep that in my service history.

Have you pulled the hoses and EGR unit to clean it out and looked at the swirl flaps for soot as well?

Its a regular job to de-carbonise the EGR depending on how much city driving you do.

Our D5 bought at 80,000K was cleaned at 90 odd thousand and was good but still dirty. My indie shop uses Valvoline Low Soot oil to eleviate buildup and any smoke. She drives it like she stole it so little chance of it sooting up!

That will be my next Job. The Nulon C3 oil is a low crud oil.

EGR clean is straight forward. Access on the XC90 is good but tricky is some spots.

Pulling the intake is a bit annoying as you have to pull the Injectors. Once you pull them you also have to replace the sealing copper washer. If the existing washer gets stuck in there you will need a special tool to remove it.

a month later

Penrite technical support recommend their E+C2 oil which is 0W30, as per volvo spec.

Castro recommend Castrol Edge LL-03 which is a 5W-30 mid saps oil, who partners with Volvo. From everything I have been reading putting the 0W-30 in Australia is overkill. Here in Victoria even, I don't think we will ever see -20C. I also think changing oil every six months is a very good idea, the recommended intervals from Volvo are ridiculous.

Update on 140,000k

Put Valvoline 5/30 in as BMG uses it in all cars.

Having swapped to Amsoil in the V8 in going to do short oil change on D5 to Amsoil after the head work so any stray soot is cleared out.

Intake hose from EGR had 10.00mm of soot build up around hose reducing intake volume and swirl flap arm area leaking and swirl flaps coked but not too bad, one injector stuffed (chuffing) and loose tappers , failing lifters.

Plastic pipe from airbox to turbo breaks its tabs so moves too much and one small hose coming off it to head/inlet from EGR has a seal in it that fails. It’s an $800 part…… Used ones$ 200. So dumb.

Pretty shitful engine……

$500 lifter/tappers from UK.

$800 in cleaned swap over cam cover and EGR hose plus swirl flaps, seals. O rings, cam seal etc and new swirl arm.

Cost of a new or used injector.

You would do cam belt and other wear items while there=$$

This is why petrol engine is not only more reliable but less maintenance.

Economy was up there with what my T6 V60 was running as well.

She drives it like she stole it but I suspect that traffic jams are the culprit. Always best diesel from same servo as well.

I hate the thing, stinks too…..
