Evening all. Its been years since posting here. Previously owned a lovely 92 240 wagon with the 940 turbo bits on it. This place was a massive help during that process!

I moved to the US 5 years ago to be with the wife’s family and live in the rusty NY state area. 240 wagons are hard to come by in decent condition so I found a lovely 95 940 turbo wagon in California and drove it home sight unseen 3500 miles a couple years ago.

It has recently become victim to the corrosion of the circuit board that runs the speedo. It seems to be a fairly common issue.

My question is this. Can I simply bypass the corroded sections by tacking some wire to join the broken circuits?

Or do I need to ‘do it properly’ and replace the capacitor that apparently leaks and causes said corrosion?

It was working fine up until about 2 months ago and then started dropping out and coming back online but is now dead. I can only assume that the freezing temps we get here (-25c in winter) have caused the cap to finally leak after 30 years seeing stable temps in California.

I am fairly handy and willing to learn to fix it. But knowing me I may either get impatient or take too long to fix it. The wife drives it daily and she wants to take her driving test in it as shes knows it best and loves it. ( shes originally from the US but let her license lapse while in OZ and sadly needs to, like I had to, take the full course again to get a full license).

Should I send it to a professional to get it done properly once at a cost of circa 2-300 usd or is it a case of ‘ buy said capacitor as a part of the restoration and refit and bridge the wires’ or do I buy a multimeter and investigate the whole thing? I really dont want to spend the money but also just want it fixed

I have found some good resources to begin the testing phase such as this https://cleanflametrap.com/speedo7.html?fbclid=IwZnRzaAUBc0JwZG9mAWZkaWQWUNcomnQfbjLV89AmlodGwfpzOizkeWV4dG4DYWVtAjExAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkCjY2Mjg1NjgzNzkAAR7duUabVWAKct_8QKRhuwMuxvNezwTHaY-9ZimBozjhIRLcdEEF5zC0Mzcggw_aem_JnSinKjYACPTQgTt6GyRfg

But I think that is for the earlier gen 940. The 95 940 Turbo here in the US was the last ones Volvo sold here and are essentially the 940s that we got back in OZ. I have photos but they are too big. Ill work on reducing them and report back.
