bigal I have a first world problem and after advice. My german sports car hasn't had much love or attention lately as I've spent any spare time I have had on a better car - the volvo 145. Now I have the 145 on the road it is time to give the german some TLC. The tyres have good tread but my main concern are the big fat Yokohama C-Drives on the rear.. they must be 10 years old this year. Time for them to go you think? I believe they are a safety concern being this old but after advice. Seems a shame to throw out these nice tyres with plenty of tread left on them.
Major Ledfoot Yes. Absolutely. Don't risk the car or yourself. Get rid of them and get new ones. Sure it's expensive, but hey, it's a rear engined Porsche, and they need good tyres on them. I read the tale of an idiot who drove his 1970s car on 20+ year old tyres at motorway speeds "because they had plenty of tread and you can't buy those exact tyres any more".... and then had a big sook when they disintegrated and others chewed him out for being recklessly stupid for doing 100 kays per hour with them on a public road.
Spac If it was an old Laser or something, I doubt that you would have a problem unless they were visibly perished. But the overpowered Beetle probably deserves a bit more care and attention - both because it has a lot more power/weight on those wheels and also because the cost of new tyres is a much smaller percentage of the value of the vehicle.
Angus242164 If the car has been in a cool garage most of the time, they will be a bit softer than tyres of the same age that have been outside in the sun, but given it's a 911 and they have a strong reputation for losing traction at hard to predict times, I would say replace them now, or drive it lightly until you do. Over a decade ago a friend of mine inherited an R31 Skyline with old Olympic Sprinters on it. They had 90% tread remaining, but the rubber was rock hard. One night he slid out on a bend and it went sideways into a tree, impacting between the driver's door and the front wheel arch. He was lucky to avoid leg injuries, his right foot was trapped between the pedals for a short time but there were no injuries. He was probably taking the corner too fast, but I suspect it would have been fine with better tyres.
carnut1100 Over 6 years old and I’m a bit hesitant. Over 8 and I will drive gingerly until I can fit new ones. Over ten on a 911 is asking for trouble in my opinion.
bigal Decision made. The tyres will be going - in style.. big burnout in the middle of the night in the kmart carpark sound good?

NeddySkelther Get new ones , trust me and the other guys , I have some motorcycle experience with bad tyred and you don't want that on a car , but yeah the burnout sounds cool haha
