The wife is keen to transport the kids in an XC90. The cars have impressive space and safety features. Could anyone tell me or direct me to internet lore that could confirm if the running gear from a manual xc70 is directly mechanically compatible with a pre 2007 xc90 running a 2.5T petrol engine.
Another option is to import the running gear from a 6 speed d5 UK/Europe which is likely to be $2-3k (at least) regardless of whether one would advise owning a d5.
I read this interesting write-up on another forum

I feel somewhat inspired after reading the
trouble-free ownership of 'Pastry's suspiciously cheap XC90 2.5T'

Could be interesting!
Look at @JeremyK thread on his xc manual conversion, and indeed his repairs to the auto.
The repairs may have worked if the torque converter had been refurbished so there is hope.
It is a worthy cause but, that you see more go to crusher rather than an economical fix, sort of anywhere in the world, indicates you will be up for a big steep hill pushing that cart.
If you are up for it, and the wife can wait, go!

manual 2.5t would be pretty sweet, the 5 speed auto is the main downside to them
the M66 can come out of anything p2... (s60/v70r etc) as they are all the same, just need the xc90 manual spec front cv's (or make ure own)
not sure about shifter or the pedal box... but easy enough to source small bits like them from europe

There is an xc90 manual that might be worth a call that Gav has posted. Moved it to a seperate thread in radar.

Woah Wait up, a d5 from 2004? Is it an Australian delivered car? The earliest one I've ever seen is late 05 from memory.
All the d5 manual cars available in the UK are 6 Speed. Hopefully this is the case. I will call him tomorrow and ask a few questions.
Loss of power Sounds fuel related possibly due to windscreen leak. Anybody transported a car from Perth to Sydney? If Mike reports shipping a car from Brisbane to Sydney is around $500 then I'm guessing it could be over $2k unless it could be placed on an 18 wheeler or freight train..

@Rogue242gt, it will be interesting if it is an actual manual. There are alot of miss leading adverts on gumtree tree.

Fuel system failure is more likely. I hear of enough engines being swapped over on d5s at Volvo workshops.
On the other hand it could be an egr/throttle body issue.

The advert does refer to a 'new clutch' but no interior shots and interestingly does not show the rear tail gate badging which is the only visual way to tell which engine it has without lifting the hood as far as I know.

This is interesting:
-manual xc90 purchased from WA (originally from UK as well, lol) eg: 2950 AUD + 1055 AUD shipping to sydney =4005 AUD wow, thee maths is mighty
-manual xc90 in Cumbria listed on Gumtree 1295 GBP + 879 GBP shipping to sydney is 2174 GBP = 3798 AUD @ todays conversion rate
$50 AUD Import application fee + 5% duty 114 AUD + 10% GST 227 AUD = 4189 AUD (assuming the car requires no modification to comply with ADR) edit: sure to be quarantinefees associated with cleaning etc
after recouping costs from all the bits you sell off of the now parts car = profit....
errr, well much win at least.

At least if it's aus bought, there no f'ing around with customs the hard work has been done
Rogue242gt
Why does everything fun have to make it past customs?
Vee_Que
Customs includes asbestos checking now as well. And you have to pay a few more taxes unless it's a personal import I thought.

Can always put it in a boat and land it in the middle of know where, and put a set of plates on it and drive it off.

If you're set on a manual I think this is ultimately the way to go. I'd like to do it, the AT is so limited it's silly.

Taking the transmission difficuities out of the picture the XC90 looks to be a lot of bang for the buck that can also protect its occupants. How many other volvos can fit a 240 inside it? The plan would be to buy a car I like or one that has a dud box and swap the manual into it. This manual xc90 gives someone the chance to convert an xc90 to a manual for $3500 - $4000 vs the cost of an exchange box.
One could also recoup some costs if needed from the parts car.
XC90's for sale with transmission problems are going for $2000 - $3000 or less yet the good ones start around $8000 - $9000. The market is telling me a dud transmission could cost you $6000 or $4000 with $2000 from IPD/FCP lol.
Does anyone know what a xc90 auto transmission costs these days.
pastry
I'd guess anything from $800 to 2k, but as usual best to just buy a whole car!
The S60 I bought had the same engine and box, but won't have had to make quite as much effort to shift itself. I think it was a better move than buying one from an XC90.
That manual Xc is only worth it for the box as far as I can see. I'd have to say TBH there are probably not that many worthy spares on an example like that. Also no idea if it'd share the actual useful backup stuff like alternator/PS pump etc – i'd think not.
But, get it as low as you can and run for it with that box!
Oh and FWIW I have shipped a Saab wagon for 700ish from Perth to Syd depot.
Rogue242gt
Do you remember who you shipped with? A saab wagon weighs what, 1600 kg? The extra $355 must be for the extra 500 kilos of car plus the fact the truck now has a camel back so aerodynamic considerations as well.
Seems to track unless I'm missing something or
you know.......more than usual.

nah, you're about right i reckon – just a ref. It was with Ceva.
