Brown sludge in coolant reservoir, oil in sump looks fine, any ideas?

50/50
Or
Not 50/50?
STfour
I really don't understand
STfour
It's oily sludge, not rust
STfour
My only question is, transmission, or engine, or radiator
STfour
Or turbo
STfour
I would really need somebody to help me have a look at this, I don't trust a mechanic enough to know they weren't ripping me off and throwing parts and head gaskets.
jamesinc
Head gasket? Probably? Or the radiator, it has an integrated oil cooler. But I'd start with the HG, a compression test might be revealing.
STfour
I have a compression tester, what should I look for?
STfour
Dipstick, oil cap, is totally fine. Could it be transmission cooler? It's a 2002 c70 t5

The damn radiator has an oil cooler built in for the auto and the engine oils, one each side.
It is possible that it leaks into the coolant and may need replacing, at this age it's more than likely needing replacing anyway, plus the heater matrix.
Ebay has a good one, the heater I mean, it takes a bit to find it I will link if I find it.
Radiator is cheaper from Mark, @iceton1975, worth getting the Volvo one.
Or do a big order for all wear parts from FCP and get one from them?
STfour
Would anyone be willing to come over and help me figure out what is wrong?
Ghettobird
You've got a compression tester dont you?
Pull the plugs out and check!
If you dont trust your mechanics opinion, but willing to trust a couple of online diagnosis then your going to be suspecting everything from muffler bearings to blinker fluid.
That looks like it *COULD* be a:
Headgasket
Engine oil cooler block leak
Transmission oil cooler leak
It is highly highly unlikely for oil to leak into the coolant and vice versa through the turbo
Without sending the oil off for chemical testing you cant say there isnt coolant in it.
Get it diagnosed properly, you'll save money in the long run.
The "help me now quick" thing dosnt work

Alright fair enough. I'm just panicking at the moment, and this c70 is quickly turning into a bit of a money pit. Sorry if I sound like I'm asking everyone to fix my problems.
Ex850R
Every car you buy used of this age will require cash.
Once all the major items are fixed its good for another 10 years..
Surprisingly, these volvos go ok even when treated badly.
Don't be afraid to ask, it's why we are here.
STfour
I just really hope it's not a head gasket. Or the 5 speed auto is ruined. That's why I'm panicking is all. I can deal with a radiator and fluid flush. But I don't have all the tools necessary to accurately diagnose the fault, I don't think.
STfour
The only reassuring sign for me is that the car never overheated or used coolant, so I don't think the engine's cooked
VolvoDeger
it will not be head gasket pm me and I will tell you the issue , radiator is not at fault as seen this happen plenty of times.

Telling us all would be a help for others who come to this page Steve?

Yeah snoop, It is the cooler on the side of the engine sump that is leaking internally so you need to replace this with new seals. You will find that you need to fill cooling system with water and add washing powder to remove oil from system. this process you will need to do a lot of times to break down the oil. Once the water is clear then add your coolant but you might find some hoses might go soft down the track as oil has affected them, I have done this job plenty of times lately and hope this helps you out. I am in melbourne if you need job done if nit confident yourself to do...........
cheers steve
