164 rubber seat straps

More stupid questions on my 164.

There are rubber straps under the seat bottom. Over 46 year, they have sagged to a handle, and hardened. In fact, I think they might even scratch a diamond... :-)

The SCANDIX catalog shows them, but indicates one per seat for the bottom cushion, which is clearly wrong. I have e-mailed SCANDIX about this, but I am not holding out hope...they have never answered an e-mail from me, ever.

Can anyone give me any information on where I might find some?

I have talked to anyone who has ever done upholstery work for me, and have not found anything out at all.

I had some 142 seats re-upholstered in the 80's. You could get the straps then, I would try some upholstery suppliers as other car of this vintage used a similar material. I would also try some upholstery businesses that specialise in older cars.

Hi Dave - I believe if it is the same as the 122 and 144, it's a tan-colored rubber strap with fiber reinforcing that is commonly referred to as "Pirelli webbing". I know you can buy it by the meter at a local rubber and foam vendor here in Australia. I assume you could Google it and find it locally in the US. When I re-did my 145, I think I had to cut the width of the straps down as the readily-available stuff was about 2 inches wide if I recall and the straps in my seats were something closer to 1.5 inches. I'm not using metric since you're in the USA LOL! :) I've attached a pic of a 122 that I re-did. I assume your straps look similar?

Many thanks! This is EXACTLY the photo I was looking for. I had already ordered up the Pirelli webbing, and now it all makes sense, even the wire clips that attach the webbing to the frame. Just out of curiosity, how tight did you make the webbing? Pirelli webbing has a 10% stretch factor.

No problem. I made it as tight as I could without using any special tools. I think I fed it through all the clips and pulled each segment tight before determining the final length, then probably made it a little shorter to ensure it was good and tight.
