mondo Hi guys, this has been happening for a while and I was told it is likely one of three things, 1) Fuel pump relay 2) Distributor (or cap) 3) Crank Angle Sensor I will be getting the car back from my daughter (probably on the weekend) so will look to sort this once i do. I already have a brand new relay, but I was wondering how much a distributor (or cap) and Crank Angle sensor are going to set me back and if they are jobs i could do myself? Cheers in advance. Pete
DCW242 They are available here, Not too hard to do your self, although not a lot of room to work at the back of the engine. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-distributor-cap-940-740-760-780-03215 https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-engine-crankshaft-position-sensor-740-940-271949oe https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-reference-sensor-rpm-240-740-760-780-940-271949
mondo ok, so that one i might leave to an expert then. i'm not really that handy on the spanners when it comes to cars :) any reason not to go the aftermarket sensor over the genuine one?
Slowbrick What year is it? If its a pre 89 car then it wont have a crank angle sensor, it will have a hall effect inside of the dizzy.
Slowbrick Yeah so this is what he will need. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-impulse-sensor-740-760-780-1231324221 Or just replace the whole shebang with a new one. http://www.cardone.com/Products/Product-Detail?productId=84267&p=rock&jsn=383
nickm Also check the injector relay sometimes called radio suppression relay. Your car does not have the hall sensor in the distributor.
Slowbrick Yeah now that we know what year it is hahaha. Yeah will have the crank position sensor on the bellhousing. Isnt a particularly hard job to do but the access is limited. I would just pull the entire intake off. Pulling the intake is a 10 minute job if you rush and about 30 minutes if you have never done one. Then its a 5 minute job to replace the CPS. Replacing the CPS with the intake on can either be a 10 minute job or a 2 hour job full of swearing and cursing depending on how flexible and strategic you are :p
mondo i am not blessed with Donald Trump sized hands... ;) i will jump online and order the CS and dizzie cap tonight. cheap enough to replace regardless. try one at a time to see which it could be, then keep the other on hand as a spare. i have a few spare relays, definitely a fuel pump relay, maybe an injector relay. will have to check. many thanks for the assistance provided so far.
mondo picked the car up today and drove it 520km to get it home from Wollongong. Ran flawlessly. Will have to monitor it's performance and see what action to take.
mondo Another 500km done, no issues. i'm thinking my daughter's driving style may well have been the problem. either that or she was skimping on fuel and running e10 or something
ToomanyVolvos I did have an intermittent issue on a 940 which has the same crank angle sensor on top of the bellhousing. Run fine then nothing - both the other relays can a cause the same as I've recently discovered. I'd do all 3 just to rule out future issues. The crank angle sensor is really not that hard if you have the right tool: a stubby 10mm ratchet ring spanner (Bunnings has a great set of "craftright" stubby ratchet spanners for <30). I find leaning over from the left side of the car with my right hand onto top of bellhousing easiest. Take a dry run without the spanner to locate it by feel and get your bearings because the heater hoses can make it hard to see. It's really not hard with the right tool.
