Here's another question.
Were the 244 / 240 GLE's ever available with 4 spd plus overdrive manual?
Did they have the 103kW 242GT motor?
Did they have leather interiors?
If they were available, are there any such cars left out there?
Regards
Alan
One question, many parts!

Were the 244 / 240 GLE's ever available with 4 spd plus overdrive manual?
Yes, they were available, there is a number out there.
Did they have the 103kW 242GT motor?
No. Probably what your thinking is that a few years after the B23E 2,300 cc GT engine was introduced (1979), it then became the standard capacity 'fuel injected' engine in Australia for the 1981 model year, replacing the B21E.
The GT engine was 104kW or 140hp. Afterwards for standard 240's this output was reduced to around 130hp with a milder cam and some other changes.
Did they have leather interiors?
Generally no, most have cloth interiors, leather was an expensive tick box. However, the 264 was often spec'd with leather seats. There is some 240's with leather seats and they are lovely with the other interior finishes, but bordering on rare in my opinion.
If they were available, are there any such cars left out there?
Yes, they are around, but to find the exact combo of a high spec 240 with a manual is not that common as people would tick the auto, pwr steer, air cond, leather. Surviving examples are desirable, so people tend to hang-on to these up-spec examples.
Many parts - yes.

242GT Turbo
Thanks for your reply.
As you could probably guess I was trying to find out how close a 244GLE could get to a 242GT.
The leather was just an extra nicety which is not that important.
Mainly power steered manual with overdrive and a/c.
130 or 140 there's not that much in it. A good option if the 242GT cars are too expensive or too hard to find (It looks like they are getting a bit thin on the ground).
Bye the way how hard is to to get replacement timing belts and how hard is it replace them?

Readily available, good idea to get a new tensioner bearing as well.
Not hard to replace per say.
For discussion, replacing a Volvo 240 timing belt is probably a piece of cake compared to most vehicles these days as the belt is right in front of you and EXTERNAL to the engine.
Compare that to engines with timing chains and internal to the engine, and at the rear of the engine to boot meaning you have to drop the engine and gearbox to remove = VW and Porsche diesel V6.

What are your thoughts on a 244GLE manual as a viable option to a 242GT?
Also how about clutch replacements?

sorry, but the 1982/3 244gle had the same cam as the later gts did, which made them more drivable. They are rarer now than a gt as they are seen as a poor cousin to the 2 door, so to find 244gle with or without leather interior of that age that is in good condition, is pretty much impossible, compared with finding a looked after 242gt.
The gle usually is driven into the ground and I've seen many with leather interiors that are beyond saving. The engines on the gt or gle are both b23e and with kjet, if they haven't have maintainence on them of the efi, they will not run as good as they should and if you don't do the work yourself, you will be up for a big spend.
The gle here is the u.k glt, at least in that age range.
If you are worried about where to find a timing belt, you've not done any basic search even in this forum, which is disappointing as there is lots of information to read on suppliers in its on thread even.
You can fit the camshaft used to give the higher power figure to any Volvo 2.3, so the 8- on cars with the smoother b230 will use it also. But they are slightly lower compression. You add the cam and gain the different driving characteristics and also get a real efi system that may still need work, just not as much. The later bodies hold up against rust better.
You can easily add sway bars to any 240, and www.dvs.net.au sell upgraded Springs that are better than the gt Springs, but that is personal preference and they can guide you better.

My 1983 gle has velour interior which I think was the most common , basic cloth interior in the gl model
