I picked up this tranny this morning for $80. I was told it was a 4 speed w/ OD, and when I picked it up I saw there was no OD unit attached. I assumed it was either an m45 or m46 w/ OD removed, but I was after the flywheel anyway. When I got it home I shifted it into all the gears and turns out its a 5 speed (tranny's can be so deceiving). I assume its an M47, but can anyone confirm?




Thanks bros. Philia this thing shifts mint no slop at all, it apparently came from a car with 180000 on the clock and worked good when in car. But considering they sold me the wrong box who knows what this is from. I'm not sure if I'll sell but have acknowledged your interest. A few questions though.
  1. How can one determine that the flywheel and clutch are correct for this box?
  2. Can you please list things I will need to swap 82 240 with m46 kjet? Please include things I may already have and will need from current set up.
  3. What upgrades would you recommend on box while its out? i.e. lightened flywheel, short shifter
If Q2 is to much don't worry about. I'm mainly concerned about 1
1. The clutches are the same if your current car is a m46. Only the early m45 cars got the lower spline count clutch plates
The only way to know for sure is to pull the existing box. As your probobly going to put in a new clutch with the new box you dont really need to care about what is in it now as it will have a flat flywheel
2. You must have a new trans mount (the rubber bit) and a m47 spec front half drive shaft and new release bearing. Everything else is the same... which means retain everything else except for the electrics for the m46 overdrive which you can now remove. Optional bits include clutch kit
3. Clean the box and replace all seals and also fill with 70w90 full syn gl4 gear oil (must ensure not gl5). Use a turbo clutch instead of the n/a clutch. Replace the rear main seal while your there cause easy.
Short shifter is mehh (cant shorten it enough to make a viable difference)
Flywheel can be lightened quite bit but its still going to rev slowly and isnt worth your money if staying as n/a kjet

If you use the deep dish flywheel, if it has drilled holes, sell it and I can sell you a flat flywheel instead that is lighter and better suited to your car.
I'm not experienced in this field so here are pictures of clutch assembly that came with the box. I've tried pull it apart but seems stuck together. Is this the correct flywheel?


It's a later flywheel. I can't see the edges of the flywheel, does it have drilled holes?
