Update: I have sold this car. Sorry for the late update.
Hey all,
I'm new here. I was looking for how to fix my Volvo but it seems maybe I should just sell it. It's my third Volvo since moving to AUS. The first was pretty trashed and was given to me. It wasn't running but I got it going. A year later it got rear-ended. Insurance would not repair as it cost "more than the car was worth".
I am mechanically inclined so I stripped all the usual parts that fail on Volvos and bought another old Volvo sedan that needed some attention to get it going. (This was in Canberra). I moved to NSW with it but eventually it started leaking oil from the main seal. It wouldn't pass inspection in NSW because it had an small oil leak (too expensive to fix) so again I stripped that one and let it go. I got another Volvo. This one was obviously loved by its previous owner. Engine super clean! No AC but it didn't give me trouble.
Until recently...
Like my other Volvos it seems the fuel pump relay is failing. I ordered a new one to arrive soon. It has died on me twice while driving and once on my husband. He said the brake pedal was super hard and he could not brake. I thought maybe the brake booster check valve. The brakes work great and the pedal does what it should when you start the car (give a little). I popped out the check valve and the idle changed (and there was good suction) so it makes me think that's not failing. I checked the fuses and they all look fine- no corrosion.
I am moving to Japan for a year in a few months and am going to have to sell the car eventually anyway. I just hoped it would have been later rather than sooner so I didn't have to rent a car for so long.
I know there are several things this could be and it's very likely a simple fix but I just don't have the time to play with it and I don't want to risk an accident to save some money.
I am selling this car along with lots of other extra working parts for 240 Volvos. Some of the things I can recall off the top of my head include a radiator, starter, ac compressor (I think), alternator (I think), lots of relays and switches, some head lights, a tow bar, batteries, motor mounts (new), air filters (new), two ball joints (new), oil pan gasket (new), seat belts, radio, ignition coils, in-tank fuel pump (new), I think the external fuel pump too, Haynes manual... Oh yeah, and a kit to replace the rear main seal. I thought hard about replacing it on my 2nd Volvo (Spider Car) before I decided not to try it on my own without a motor winch.
If you are interested, please make an offer. I bought the car for $1500 but that was the ex-wife selling it to make her ex angry- just to give you an idea. I don't want to send this one to the junker. I named her Divorce Car and she deserves to be loved for a while longer.
BTW, I'm in Horsfield Bay, NSW.
Update (in response to poster (Thx!)):
The odometer was not working when I bought it so it registers ~60,000km. No idea what the actual KMs are.
It is automatic. It has current rego. Tires are fairly new with a recent alignment. Battery is new.
I would let everything go together for $1500.
