@240 Go go go go go!!!
240
I'll ring him right away!
I wonder if I brought a new clutch line with me, if I'd be able to drive it home...
Angus242164
Good chance, once the system was bled, pretty easy to do under the bonnet without getting under the car.
I can express post a hose to you on Monday, New or used.
lasercowboy
And the clutch bleeding procedure is surprisingly easy!
And depending what the route home is like, you might not need perfect clutch activity, just passable.
I have driven a 240 home with no clutch - I would't recommend it, but it's possible.
240
It's in Manly, getting from there to the Hume Highway is a lot of stop-start so clutch would be useful!
Spoke on the phone today...
This is what he told me.
Initially, it had a fairly loose, dodgy clutch. He took it to a mechanic who 'tightened' it. Following that, the hydraulic line developed a leak.
He took it to the mechanic again, who replaced the clutch line, but the new one then developed a leak too.
Sounds to me like his 'mechanic' doesn't know how to fix a clutch!
However: Of the gearbox, he said it has trouble getting into 1st gear unless you're completely stopped. (Moving very slightly, it won't go in.) He also mentioned something about it slipping out of 2nd...
Bottom line is, I wouldn't want to end up with a gearbox that's no better than my current one... Thoughts? Does it sound saveable with a fluid change or is it maybe too far gone?
lasercowboy
Sounds like synchro on first is gone. Best avoided in that case...
Spac
Won't go into first with a dodgy clutch is 100% normal. Everyone talks about "just jam it in", but it's not physically possible unless the clutch has properly disengaged.
240
OK so synchro could be fine? He did mention that he thought it got worse once the clutch went bad...
He also mentioned something about it popping out of 2nd when he shifted into it, unless he had his foot on the throttle. Something along those lines. Any ideas?
The car's $300, plus whatever it costs me to get it home. If I can get a good gearbox out of it, it's worth it.
Angus242164
The first gear issue is the clutch, not the box.
Popping out of gear is typically a gearbox wear issue, very rarely seen on a Volvo RWD gearbox.
I have seen 240 clutch hoses leak before, but for a brand new hose to start leaking straight away... nah.
I suspect the clutch is stuffed and it has started to push the thrust bearing through the worn spring fingers, or the fork has worn on the pivot point and is about to pop through, and the fluid loss is actually from the slave cylinder over-extending, and the seal moving past the edge of the cylinder bore.
I'd get it towed, or if you feel like an adventure just drive it without the clutch.
I once drove my 760 across Melbourne to work with no clutch, only to find I couldn't fix the problem at work (fork worn through), so then had to drive it back home again. It's not too bad, just leave it in third which gives you a range from 30-80km/h, and slow down well in advance of red lights to try to avoid complete stops.
240
If the popping out issue indicates excessive wear then I should probably walk away from this one. I'd like a box that can last me a while.
Angus242164
To me it seems like a lot of car (parts) for the money, if it were me I'd buy it, use the box with a new clutch and a change of gearbox oil, and see what happens.
If it still jumps out of gear, look for another box at that point. Changing the box is a pretty quick and easy job if you're not touching the clutch.
240
So you think that there's a chance that changing the oil could fix the problem?
My biggest problem is that it's in Sydney and I'm in Canberra, having it towed to me could get expensive.

Well, you'd fly up, get a bus/taxi to the car, replace the hose, then buy some clutch fluid (because you probably can't take that on the plane), bleed it - or now the line is on, get a mechanic to. Then get a roadworthy/pink slip to drive on NSW roads and drive it home on an RTA permit. You'll have to find someone that will, and check if you can do that. (I got a temporary permit to take my unregistered car to be blue-slipped for registration - but that had to be the "nearest practical mechanic". I went further than that - but not as far as you need to.) So check the RTA site if you can drive it home on a temporary permit once you have a pink slip.
Or, maybe he knows someone that will pass it because it's only just out - then go and register it - drive it home - put your gearbox in it - resell it as a moving car. Or just cancel the rego again and get most of your rego money back.
BTW... He's put up more photos since I first saw it. It has more problems than just gearbox. The hood looks bent down at the front, and the driver front right corner looks like it's been smashed in, bent back out, and patched up with a new headlight. (I don't just mean the chrome strip - look how the plate that contains the hood latch - above the headlight - is 'cut', and the headlight is pushed back in.)

You could get an Unregistered Vehicle Permit to drive it home (cost = $27), but the biggest issue is if you could drive it home without working on it. It will be impossible to drive it from Manly to the M2 entrance without stopping, as there are numerous traffic lights (many with red light cameras of course) and plenty of stupid drivers between there and the motorway. Once you're on the M2 outside of peak hours, you should then have a straightforward run via M2/M7/M5 to the Hume, and thence to Canberra.
Expect to be pulled over when using the UVP, but as long as your paperwork is all there, there'll be no issue.
As Angus suggested, the best solution is to tow it.

Surely a good gearbox sent from anywhere via E-GO couriers us a way better option?
240
@Ex850R I agree but I haven't been able to find such a gearbox! (If you know of a good M47 please do let me know!)
@bgpzfm142 thanks... if I could get the clutch useable that could be a good plan.
Ex850R
Have Iceton (Berry's) or Voldat got anything?
DCW242
Last time I asked Voldat didn't have any M47s, Berry's has one that is noisy and needs a rebuild.
