Ramrodfunk After replacing the head on my '93 B230fx motor ,the temperature gauge is reading much higher than the old head. I replaced the water pump and thermostat with new parts. The thermo is a "Tridon" replacement and the water pump is Volvo. The temperature is stable but very high. Where as the old head would read at about 4 o'clock ( on the low side ) the new one reads around 11 o'clock .
Anthony One check is that the thermostat needs to be positioned so the little hole is at the top. Otherwise air pockets will exists. You can sort of tell if the engine is hotter than normal by opening the bonnet, if its proven its running hot there will be strange smells. Obviously re-verify sensor is ready correct,,, if a real issue, then head gasket blocking of coolant lines needs to be investigated.
Anthony Vee_Que;88824 wroteSensor cleaned? Id bet the thermostat is hotter though. Even if a hotter thermostat was fitted I would have thought there would be little difference to normal temp gauge position, as long as radiator is in good order.
Vee_Que I've experienced them being different if the gauge is somewhat accurate. My 740 runs bang in the middle at all times for instance with a 82 degree thermostat.
Anthony Technical discussion - Suggesting if the normal 87 (or 92) were installed the temp gauge would read much the same after the thermostat had actually fully opened (engine up to temp). Assuming radiator is in good order. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the humble thermostat. I run a cooler unit myself in a track 242GT but I want it to open early and coolant flow to begin to prevent any hot spot occurring.
Vee_Que I installed tridon units on other cars that are also not Australian and had higher running temps, its why they do a high flow option, basically they are too small and open different to oem.
Angus242164 Are you using the same temp sender that was in the old head? If the old thermostat is still around, maybe refit it and see what happens.
Ramrodfunk Thanks to everyone for your help. I got myself a 87 degree thermo and the gauge is reading at 9 o'clock right in the middle of the gauge. Why do the thermo's have different temperature opening values? I have seen some on ebay rated at 71 degrees. Cheers Rod
Vee_Que Different climates, places that don't see above 30 degrees and have less harsh sun so the road doesn't get as hot need to keep the temps upn
