Tales of the Volvo recovery tow slut (the BMW)

edited February 2014 in Non-Volvo 7927 / 69joined Jul 2013
Though I might start a thread about the life of the Tow Slut

Most recent use has been moving Spac's S60 from Newcastle to Yass and then bringing back the now dead V70 to C-Town
trip was an overall average of 10.2L/100KM while loaded

Before x-mas I drained and refilled the diff fluid (origional to car) with some semi synth stuff
there was a small amount of metal shavings in it
Did it again this weekend after another 5000KM and yet more shavings :-(
I might need to start looking for a diff from merika (yay time for an LSD)
I think you need to add i was in an s80 with three wheels getting pulled backwards and was told to "hold on shit is about to get real".

Unfortunately they formed in 1997, which is after the "good music" cut-off date of December, 1996.

The battery that came in the car from 2010 pissed me off for the last time last weekend
It had a bad cell so it would work fine 90% of the time and then some of the time it would just not start (electroncis hate going under 10v)
So... $200 later it has a new calcium M88 Battery with >900CCA and >150mins reserve
    yay big battery....

Yeah, Those are the 17's that came on the car, they are now sitting in the shed
    I have a set of 5 spoke 17's and the current 18's

Whoever buys the car from me is getting lots of rimps...

You bought a Clio to flip?

Wino bought it about 2.5 years ago, I helped him do the timing belt and some other stuff (he did most of the unbend 16 valves on his own) and then he traded it for a V8 commode
He then wrote the commode off some months later and took the $$$ from ins and started down the path of the galaxy if I remember things corectly

It was a dam fun little car (was the 172hp sport with many many tastefull mods) and I wish I was able to buy it from him then.... as it would have kept me form aquiring another dozen volvo's

The battery in my brother TDi golf is about that size and is going on 10years old now or more I reckon. Later vw's have smaller batteries but I'm impressed with the life on his one!

I killed the battery that came in the car myself due to some stupid use of the stereo and lack of understanding of how stupid power hungry the i-drive system is....
Now that I know... current battery should be the last one the car gets for a long time

well... it started becoming hard to start this morning, starting cranking RPM is within specs for a good starter and the battery voltage is not dropping below 10v
    sooo...
since this was very sudden and there is noticed slight loss of power
Either the glow plugs have died
    or
the Glow plug controller has died
    or
one+ fuel injector seals have gone and are leaking
    or
some combination of the above 3

    Sigh
    Least the parts are cheap
Glow plugs is $120 for the set
    Glow plug controller is $120
having the injectors re-sealed and flowed is $300

So I have ordered the equivalent of Vida for the BMW (INPA/DIS/SSS) and it should be to me by early next week
and then I can see just what error codes might be in it for the glow plugs if any...

This was bound to happen. Just when you were convincing us of how well it's served you.
That said, it has sounded like its been pretty good.

The last time I talked up the usefulness of my DD, it crapped a coil (COP. Replaced all 6).
Likes good coffee & motorsport. Builds stuff. Occasionally races stuff.

I put 98k troubble free KM onto it over ~3 years without any issue
I'm perfectly happy with having to put $1k into it ever 3 years and 100K KM

    At the moment...
Wheel Bearing = $145 (was $49 from USA but didn't want to wait)
    Battery = $200
    Whatever to fix it now...

I'm still at the point where I will either trade it for an XC90 at the end of the year or just drive it into the ground
    I think its getting nervous....

How do the notorious electronics of the older cars factor on these cars?
  • 7927 / 69joined Jul 2013
    Well...
Even though its not yet running right... I still went out and got it a present just cause....
    $250 later....
Set of 18x8.5 for the front and 18x10 for the rear

Came with some miss-matched tyres, so going to have all of the ones on it thrown into the trash, then going to spend some time with the rims and clean up some of the curb marks and re-paint them gloss or flat black
Going to transport the 245/40/18's off the existing rims onto the front
and something new onto the rear, thinking heavily about RE001/002 or something sticky
