Just got quoted 475 to reco my cooked radiator which is just out of the question so now im looking at alternatives... i saw a 240 radiator on eBay for 150 or so which im not sure on the dimensions but is it possible to fit a bracket to it that will allow it to replace the 164 one or possibly from another model?
They are a fairly unique design in terms of tank location and shape, mounting tabs etc, I'm not aware of any other radiators that would fit without a fair bit of custom work.

A new core in the original would be the way to go, it might be worth shopping around for a better price.
hmm ill definitely shop around im guessing you think the custom work would be more expensive than that particular recore shop :(
There would be no harm in taking some measurements and pics of the 164 radiator and walking around one of the self-serve wreckers with a measuring tape, just in case something more modern is close enough to work, with appropriate brackets and mods to the fan shroud to make it work.

The issue with this is that the 164 has the tanks at the top and bottom which was the usual design on older cars, and most cars from the late '70's onwards went to a design with tanks on the ends, and radiators became wider and lower as styling changed.

I wonder how an HQ 6 cylinder radiator compares, they mount in a fairly similar fashion and are fairly cheap new, it would depend on where the hose outlets are more than anything else.
ill have a look and see if i can find the measurements of the HQ one
If its an all copper radiator moving the outlets isn't much of an issue
There's a firm in Dalby Qld makes radiators to suit both the scanias now have copper rads no tragic plastic tanks anymore and they will be making one for my Hilux soon too
Pretty certain the early ones are different, not sure about later ones though, that might be a possibility.
Thought the first one on the list looked relatively similar could always adapt the hoses

Universal rad hoses are not the end of the world as long as you can place them so they always clear the fan
If you want it, I have a radiator from an automatic 1973 164E, you can have it for $50 plus shipping.
whats its condition?
