Hi everyone, as title says I'm new to volvo's just bought a 1997 awd 855 with the 2.4LPT
really happy with the car, bought as a replacement for my Girlfriends toyota yaris.
coming from saabs the volvo seems very familiar, safe and stable.
The car had a full service history and recently a service just before sale by a volvo workshop, but I am not very reassured by this considering that the windscreen was replaced but they left all the trim loose, and there is obviously an issue with the PCV being blocked, the car struggles and hesitates at more than 75% throttle and the dipstick test shows smoke after warmup.
also the coolant is completely clear....
I have got the windscreen trim fixed, just needed a couple of clips replaced,
going to flush the coolant (water) and am considering running a seal fluid and them the mandatory collant of course.
So questions..
where is the best place to buy the PCV kit?
have found a kit from Rock auto $158 delivered but...
I have been reading that it is not worth going non genuine volvo. is that the consencence here?
I have been suggested to take the car to berry group, anyone had any experience with these guys?
Thanks in advance, looking forward to becoming part of the community

Pretty much everyone on here in Victoria goes to berry motor group , you will be well looked after . Or voldat in Moorabbin .
Ex850R
Voldat for sure , BMG yep.
FCP EURO or Partforvolvonline.
SMG here in Melbz too if in hurry.
Voldat or Mark at Berry's may have bits too.
Lots of bits to replace , look at other posts here. Get it stage '0'

Thanks morgan for the quick response.
going to call around tomorrow and see what's in stock, otherwise will order online, thanks snoopy for those websites they will be very helpful.
I was planning on doing the following and see what else I find needs replacement/repair.
PCV system
plugs
rotor
oil/filter
trans fluid
vacuum lines
air filter
brakes
ignition leads
clean check radiator and intercooler pipes.
check clean injectors
replace fuel filter
check replace fuel pump.
anything else that I have missed?

The uro stuff is oem volvo for pcv
Ive never seen anyone ever say the aftermarket stuff wasnt as good as volvo for pcv anyways on an 850
What condition are the angle gear/vicous coupling/drive shaft in on it?
Reuben
OK, it's just what I have read while browsing the internet. I'm not sure regarding the angle gear, coupling etc, going to get it on the ramp tomorrow.

Nice , a manual awd few and far between good find !
Reuben
Yes it was the manual that caught my eye, hate autos, I'd rather have a low powered manual than a high powered auto.
Ex850R
Ooohhh , that manual BLACK one! Excellent!
Coolant reservoir if it is original , common to fail and lose the head gasket.
If hoses original just order new with a new radiator as well , get Nissens one , no cheapies. Intercooler hoses , do88 or Samco although I found cheapo eBay ones to be good and easier to fit as others very tight.
CTS and THERMOSTAT! thermostat if not been done will be all screwed up , it's common.
Much more little bits , read here.
Online from overseaes you get wrong info for Aussie cars.
Reuben
thanks for the recommendations snoopy, if by "Ooohhh , that manual BLACK one! Excellent! " you meant the one on volvo club of victoria then yes that's it, and it seems it's still for sale HAHA...
I will write a list and get things rolling, going to check the angle gear/viscous coupling/drive shaft tomorrow if my cold doesn't stop me. does the same test for the V70 work? last post on page 1
as seen here?

going to go through all the service logs and compare to what is actually on the car, it would not surprise me if the last service was a scam just because they knew the owner was doing it for a sale and was going over seas.... then again with that attitude, maybe there servicing is always dodgy.
Ex850R
Servicing rarely involves the items I mentioned and if it does it's cos it's fails. Some of them fail and destroy the engine.
Performance improves with a lot of it too.
O2 sensors are common at this age.

So spoke to berry motors, turned out he had driven it, and he thinks it needs the fuel pump, clutch and the pcv done, all up a bit of $$$$$, but you guys are right he sounds so genuine and help full, I'm looking forward to learning more about these cars and talk to the guys at BMG in person.

Hi everyone, been enjoying this car very much, girlfriend really likes the prestige look of the front of the car.
So as you know has what we thought was a fuel pump problem, I wasn't convinced and ended up swapping the CPU and......... Yes car had no hesitation or spluttering, powers on wonderfully. Ordered a whole lot of parts plus the breather kit as it's blowing out the oil stick. Still need to get on top of installing that.. And one question to keep you on your toes, the clutch works great, doesn't slip at all. But it's engagement is really really short, I have got used to it but my dad drive it and said it should no way be that short. Any thoughts? Any way to adjust?
I'm so happy I didn't need to take the fuel tank out.. Oh and the electrical system light is on since swapping the CPU's is there any issue? Or is it just saying "hey something has changed"?
As always thanks :)

Is it disengaging at the end of the pedal travel or at the start of pedal travel?
Reuben
I'm certain All the engagment/disengagement happens very near the floor.
I will check again next time I'm in it, (can't right now, broke my coccyx and can't sit down at the moment)

If the clutch is newish then a long amount of travel can be required to get it to release and then engage quickly
My S40 is much the same way and after you drive it for a few weeks you should get very used to it and not really notice unless your driving lots of other manual cars

I was told that the clutch was going in my old V70 when I got it with 173,000 miles... It was still there 50,000miles later... Don't worry too much about it is my view!
Reuben
Thanks guys, won't worry about it then :)

If the PCV is clogged maybe synthetic oil has not been used?
Depending on Kms, cat converter might be clogging up also.
