Rear tyre now has a bubble in the sidewall. Stopped to put the spare on and discovered the tyre iron is missing from this car. Hmm! The one time I don't have my toolbox in the car. About 20 minutes from Goulburn. If the servo there doesn't have a spare tyre iron I'll be pretty disappointed.

Side bubble on a Kumho KU31?
Happen to two I had. The other 2 had so much road noise I thought I had done a bearing.
They would not balance at all.
They were fine when I bought them but went off after 2 years
jamesinc
@tim couldn't find anything in the boot. Emptied the car out looking! Anyway coming of the freeway at Macquarie Park I felt another flat. The spare tyre this time! Which is a brand new tyre.
What even is going on. The tyres have been completely fine since I bought the car a few weeks back to now. Obviously prolonged highway driving is a trigger. The tyre that was flat yesterday morning has been fine since, unless the Beaurepairs guy switched them over, but the KU31s are directional so I doubt it... *goes and checks*
jamesinc
Turns out they're KU39s, which are non-directional. Well maybe it did go back on the opposite side then.
tim
Im pretty sure you would have the receipt in the paperwork. Atleast 3 of the tyres arent that old. The spare as you said was unused. Maybe they would have a waranty for that kind of failure, especially in the sidewall. Tempe tyres I believe the last lot came from. They arent exactly my favourite supplier though...

I think the issue might have been given the good news by Sydney roads one too many times. Anyway based on tread wear, the fronts are newish and the rears are older.

Round corner from tyre join....
I may be of tin foil hat brigade but my old s70t5 had an almost impossible tek screw in the edge of one tyre whilst left to park near mates house (don't recall why but for only a day or so) guess what , tyre joint round the corner..... Coincidence? Tek screw pretty well screwed in in odd spot , tyre cactus as can't repair ddge holes.
Either generating business or a pissed off homeowner cos I took their spot.....
Lots of weights gone onto my front wheels with Dunlop FR , they are a great tyre so unexpected!
Maybe all Volvo wheels really are cheese and need re rolled late inife.

The spare tyre (KU39) now also has sidewall bubble. WTF. It's a brand new tyre.
tim
3 out of the 5 tyres are from the same purchase, most probably same batch. Take them back.
jamesinc
Yeah I think I'm going to. Especially that spare. Not going to use KU39s again though. I wonder if I can still get KU31s. Otherwise I might buy some nice Potenzas.
jamesinc
I think I'm going to switch to 215/45R17 for the rears.

Momo outrun M3 are a far better budget tyre tyre. About $100 each.
They do 205/45/17. I got 40,000km out of a set.
They grip better than the KU31 and ride better too.
Mike ran them on his BMW.

Also the KU31s I had problems with were from Tempe.
I Spoke to St George tyres about it. They stock both Kumho and Momo for around the same price.
They said It was not uncommon for the Kumho to fail like this..
jamesinc
I don't like Tempe tyres. Sure they're marginally cheaper than many other places but I have to drive to goddamn Tempe.
nickm
I think they sell old stock or 2nds
morgan
I put potenzas on my 240 , very happy with them , $500 for 4 seemed a good deal pay for 3 get 4th free

still running them on the BMW and also on the XC90 now
dam effing good tyre and effing good value
my trac day notes are that after 20 laps of the fast circuit at eastern creek in the bmw and hitting 250KPH on the main strait every lap... they got a bit oily and squirmy but were still highly controllable and easy to manage
jamesinc
Okay, off the back of the good reviews I'll try a set of Momo M3s.

i have to defend ku39s. I had them on my xr6t and they would grip very, very well. the downside is they would last about 15-20k only.
perhaps Tempe had a dodge batch.

I don't have much experience with KU39s, but years ago
@Slowbrick recommended me the KU31 and it's been a great tyre for the 240s. I found on my old 850 when I ran KU31s they wore down very fast.
