Klaptrap24 Hey guys, I was just wondering what I could do with my exhaust in NSW. I know that it has two mufflers so I have a couple of questions regarding: 1. Can I cut off the rear muffler (leaving the middle muffler) and run a straight pipe/hot dog/fart can out the back? 2. Is the IPD NA sports exhaust legal in NSW? (it only has one muffler from what I see) 3. Are there any good setups that give better volume + hp gains that are relatively legal? Thanks guys
Spac There was a lot of talk about cars needing the same number/type of mufflers, but I think that may have come from an over-zealous copper who was probably defecting a dipshit P-plater in a VL. In the adult world, all that matters in practice is how noisy it is and whether there's a cat converter in place (for Post-1985 cars). Assuming we're talking about a stockish Pre-86 NA car, I'd say: A 2.25" system with a long Hotdog muffler (aka 'resonator') in the middle and a decent 'semi-straight through' (aka 'dogleg') muffler out the back, seems to be the best compromise between power, sound quality and noise level. If you wanted it quieter, replacing the resonator with a second dogleg muffler would be the next step. NA redblocks seem particularly sensitive to exhaust back-pressure. In my experience, its hard to get a 2.5" system to sound like anything other than a fart cannon on a stock motor, and there's no noticable performance gains to be had anyhow.
perko I was running mine with only the middle muffler (which is just a resonator from what I can tell) for quite some time. Sounded less like a commercial air con unit but not really an amazing note. As spac said, it may be possible that you could be defected for something like that (I honestly don't know) but you're driving an old volvo so as long as you're not a dick to the cops and it's not unreasonably loud you'll have no troubles. I was stopped by my fair share of rbt's and never had a single comment about the exhaust. No real hp gains to be had from my solution although the pants dyno gets a bit of a boost since you can actually hear the engine.
Klaptrap24 Thanks guys, my car is a 91 so it does have the cat, I've seen some hi-flow cats for the 240 which might be an option to increase power. Looks like I'll keep it as is through blue slip and rego, then I'll give the rear muffler the chop.
PaddlerEd Having run for the last 10 days without an exhaust from about 2' from the cat back on my 4Runner I can state 2 things: -Either my cat is knackered and is causing the majority of the blockage (and therefore silencing it nicely) or -The split that ran from the cat backwards was worse than I thought... Next project (when my helpful boilermaker mate has stopped fixing horse floats) is to get a 2.5" exhaust made up - the quote locally was $850 fitted!

Klaptrap24 Spac;74044 wroteFresh cats often make a noticeable difference by themselves. How about hi-flow cats? This one in particular is apparently for the 240 but seems to be quite a generic model. http://www.magnumtuning.com/en/detail/performance-catalytic-converter-vehicle-specific-universal-installation/volvo/240

Aftermarket cats (and mufflers) are generic 99.9% of the time. High flow cats are good from a performance point of view. They also seem to take longer to become restrictive.
Cal To reignite this thread; i have a 85 245 and would love if it had a more encouraging note, as it is now i can't help but wince when it revs past 5 grand. What's a cost effective way to make it sounds less like a dinghy and more like a v6 alfa/lancia? No cat or second muffler required. The IPD zaust is tempting but i read somewhere they rust out in our climate. Also postage will likely double the cost. FYI the b230e in it is stock aside from a k cam.
Klaptrap24 I cut the rear muffler off my '91 240 with a stock b230f and replaced it with straight pipe out the rear; it sounds great
jamesinc @Cal start by deleting the front muffler. If still unsatisfied, mess around with different cams to get one with a more aggressive note. Edit: you could delete the rear muffler instead like Kevin, I just find the front one is less hassle because it is easier to mount, and it's the one that Volvo used to delete in their turbo 244s.
Cal Cheers @jamesinc , i was wondering what the difference would be between front and back. @Klaptrap24 so did you cut it before the bend and run it straight out the back on drivers side?
Klaptrap24 Yes I did, used one of the original exhaust hangers off the muffler. The rear muffler does a lot more muffling than the front, if that helps.
