Just wondering where the power gets delivered to when the tracs system is turned off on an 850 awd turbo? And also,is there a way to disengage the awd system to make it rear wheel drive by any chance?
Rob
Definitely no way to direct the drive to the rear, they are primarily a front wheel drive car. Up to 50% of the power (or perhaps a little less) can be delivered to the rear... but no more.
You can remove drive to the rear by removing the tailshaft but I doubt that is what you are trying to achieve. Switching off the TRACS makes no difference to the drive wheels, it just disables traction control.

Is this the same theory with the manual gearbox? Or is it through a transfer case that causes this to happen?
Rob
sorry? don't quite understand your question.
If you are asking if the same concept applies to an 850 AWD fitted with a manual transmission as opposed to an auto transmission then the answer is yes.
The transfer case is not a transfer case as such, it is simply a crownwheel and pinion that redirects drive from the front diff carrier 90 degrees to the rear diff via a tailshaft and viscous coupling.

Thank you, yes, that's what I was trying to say.would it be possible to modify this system with a uni joints and tailshaft directly to the rear instead of a crownwheel and pinion? Sorry if these are stupid questions but I'm having alot of trouble fi dimg any info on these cars online and thought this would be the best place to source some
Rob
No, it is impossible.
To convert it to RWD you would need to turn the engine sideways and fit a RWD gearbox (M90 or similar). It is possible in theory but would take a tremendous amount of work. So many mods would be required.
Be happy with it being AWD, it is a rare vehicle.
If you want a RWD car there are plenty of other options available.

Thank you for all your help mate,I am happy with it as I know what it is.i was just curious to know as a friend of mine had told me his theory on the awd systems earlier today and I was pretty sure it couldn't be done.
Dauntless
It's possible with other AWD systems, but no Volvos that I'm aware of.
Subarus for example can be converted to RWD by modifying the centre diff.

Thanks mate,I was just watching a few videos online of rwd 850s etc to see if it could be done and there was a couple.it's just my curiosity that wants to know really
