OldnDecrepit I have now got a transmission cooler installed on my 740 and need to plug the holes where the transmission lines went in and out. Does anyone know what size plugs these are and where I might get them?
Rob They don't really need to be plugged provided you have cleaned the fluid out so that it doesn't drip on your driveway.
BradC If you are serious they are a 5/16 SAE 45 degree flare. Go to the local hydraulics shop and grab a couple of flare nuts and some copper flare bonnets. You could also try a refrigeration/hvac shop like heatcraft or actrol, but 5/16 is not commonly used in Aus. I tried there and wound up at a hydraulics place for the flare nuts, and had to make my own flare bonnets. I plumbed my Aux cooler in *before* the radiator cooler and with a thermostat. That way the cooler in the radiator does what it is supposed to do and helps get the fluid *up* to temp quicker.
Vee_Que it wont fail now there is nothing going through it. But you can use the stock fittings you removed and cut the metal pipes and crimp the ends. Done. But its not worth worrying about! The issue of using the radiator though Brad, is that transmissions don't need to warm up in most climates in Australia and the coolant in the rad is barely warming until the engine Thermostat opens, meaning you just make the trans hotter than it needs to be!
BradC Probably true. The cooler thermostat opens at about 70, and I never see in excess of that unless I'm towing anyway. This is my first auto, so it was all guesswork. Putting the temp gauge in the sump was an eye opener though, especially when towing.
OldnDecrepit Yes you can buy suitable plugs for the radiator connections. Bought mine from Hydralink on the GC. Bought 4 for $28. Gone from this To this:
VolvoHordz You can get plastic caps for them if you get lucky at the wreckers. I have got them from manual volvos that have been fitted with radiators that have the automatic cooler inbuilt.
deleted_user_160 Yeah mechanical plumbers use those nut types common as common. Here are the caps I use.
deleted_user_160 My mechanical plumbers on site. Any mechanical refrigerator shop will have them. Heldon is the brand
