Correct water pump fitment 240

Just thought I'd consult the sages regarding which water pump to fit to my 240GL Estate, I've tracked down a GMB one on-line for $65.00 including postage to Tas but I keep getting slightly skewed results when you look across the various brands. Anyone else had this issue? My model year is 1984 (April) and it's the B23E engine...

There's one specific to b21 & b23's and another for b230's.

Are we talking 2nd hand? I'm definitely going to put in new for old in the case of something as relatively cheap as this but I appreciate your suggestion, especially considering the guy's based in Tas like me. I'm always in need of the odd few bits and pieces for the 240 so might contact him regardless....

Thanks for that bgpzfm142, I can't get at the water pump at the moment to check the number of bolts but it seems pretty obvious that it would clinch it, I've got a spare from my now defunct 244 sedan that only has about 5-10,000km on it but it's been sitting around in less than ideal conditions and has a bit of corrosion on the mating face plus would need gaskets/seals, are they available separate to the pump itself? I'll whip down and check it out, it also has "gepruft" on the body (I assume german for "checked") wonder if it's euro-made?

'Gepruft' is indeed German for 'checked'. You may be lucky and have a Hepu pump - it has a brass impeller and not a pressed steel propeller. The latter are reported to have cavitation problems at high RPM. YMMV, but I'd only fit a Hepu these days.

AFAIK the gasket / seals are available seperately and you're better off getting them from Volvo as they're reported to be better than the ones that come with a Hepu pump.

Well, well, well.....Here's some shots of the pump I've had stashed away under the house (along with some other nice goodies off the old 244). The pump still feels as tight as the day it was made, it did minimal mileage before being taken off the sedan a couple if years ago. I had a 2.3 motor shipped over from Volvrek when the original 2.1 seized and replaced a number of bits and pieces before it all got too difficult and sold it for scrap.

Glad you agree! I can't even remember where I bought it from anymore but am chuffed to say the least, and now that I've flatted-off the mating surface it is nearly as good as new....

Just one more update that might be helpful to other forum-users, I rediscovered a really handy link that de-codes Volvo VIN's and from number-crunching my car's VIN can say without fear of contradiction that it IS a B23E motor, now to get the gasket and seals for the HEPU-any ideas other than the stealership?

Great decoder but there is a peculiarity in that b230e's are rolled into b23e's so it is hard to differentiate using VIN. Given the month and year combined with that you should have a b23e though.

I've used a nearly new water pump which was aok on the engine it was removed from then had been sitting a while & had a hefty leak from the front/impeller seal as it had dried out & cracked from just sitting around. Watch for that!

Not sure that is true if you look at the table on the link for e.g. 83 = B230FD w/ pulsair, 84 (that's mine) = B23E and 85 = B230FB and so on and so forth. Surely VIN's are the definitive way of getting the specific details concerning your individual car??

That had been of concern to me too, why doesn't that happen when you get old stock that has been sitting on the supplier's shelves for a long time?

85's came with B230E's here. Different markets have different decoders, UK is close to perfect for here though. Check the engine near the distributor just below cylinder 1 and 2 and you should see it stamped into the block.

Perhaps it's to do with having been run hence getting wet & hot then exposed to the atmosphere when removed & sitting around? You'll probably be fine, I just advise keeping a watchful eye on it initially.

Point taken, I guess that every time I've been quoted for stuff on the old girl the suppliers have done it based on the concept that it is a B23E (or at least that's what they've told me) I'll have a look on the block and report back, thanks for the heads-up....

It's certainly got an "as new" feel to it when you rotate the impeller but I will indeed be keeping a wary eye on it!
